Whitsun folk festival in the Magdeburger Börde
Osterweddingen, a district of the municipality Sülzetal in the Börde district, is one of those villages in the fertile Magdeburger Börde where club life defines the cultural profile. Whitsun is the highlight of the year here: The Osterweddingen Cultural and Heritage Association (KHV) and the other local clubs jointly host a four-day Whitsun festival, which has its firm place in the program of rural festival culture in Saxony-Anhalt.
The Whitsun weekend follows a well-rehearsed choreography: The kick-off on Whitsun Saturday is the football tournament of SV Osterweddingen and the Whitsun dance in the festival tent. Whitsun Sunday is dedicated to the family festival – children's program, bouncy castle, performances by local groups, catering by the local clubs. Whitsun Monday features the cultural program with performances by dance groups, local artists, and a dance in the festival tent. Whitsun Tuesday concludes the festival with a morning tractor and vintage car parade – a particularly popular tradition where dozens of restored agricultural machines roll through the village – and a large festive procession in the afternoon.
“Our Whitsun folk festival brings the whole village together” – this is how KHV chairman Sebastian Ruffert describes the atmosphere. This statement is more than marketing: In fact, the volunteer fire department, the sports club, the men and women of the KHV, the rural youth, and the church community are all involved in the Whitsun festival – a dense network of volunteers that supports cultural life in Osterweddingen. The Whitsun festival is the most visible result of this commitment.
In the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Whitsun is one of the most important folk festival periods of the year. While in Querfurt-Thaldorf, for example, the Schützen- und Burschenfest (marksmen's and lads' festival) dominates and in Quellendorf the “Kleene Pfingsten” (Little Whitsun) is celebrated on the Neptunwiese, Osterweddingen has its own unique character: less tradition, more family festival and club showcase, with the tractor and vintage car parade as its hallmark. A particularly bourgeois-Börde variant.
The four-day Whitsun program 2026 follows the established concept of the KHV. The exact schedule of program items over the days will be published shortly before the date on the KHV website. The days of the week for the 2026 Whitsun weekend correspond to Saturday (May 23) to Whitsun Monday (May 25); additional programming on Thursday/Friday (May 22) and Whitsun Tuesday (May 26) is possible depending on the edition.
Detailed Program: Publication shortly before the date at khv-osterweddingen.de.
