90 Years of Magdeburg Airport — Airshow, Concerts, and Festival Weekend
Magdeburg-City Airport (EDBM) is one of Germany's oldest civilian airfields. Opened in 1936, it has survived several eras: Reich Air Ministry, Soviet Garrison, GDR sports aviation, and post-reunification reconstruction. In 2026, the airfield celebrates its 90th anniversary – and after a 16-year hiatus, the major airport festival returns with AIR Magdeburg.
For three days, the area on the north side of the airfield transforms into a mix of airshow, city festival, and open-air concert. The main aerial attractions: the Bundeswehr's Eurofighter, A400M, and NH90, alongside civilian classics like the Yak52 and the legendary P-51 Mustang. Parachute teams demonstrate their skills, and historic aircraft take off for demonstration flights.
Fancy taking to the skies yourself? Sightseeing flights in the Antonov An-2, the Dornier Do 27, and other aircraft will be offered on all three days. Those who prefer to stay on the ground can stroll across the apron, chat with the crews, visit the static exhibition with Tornado jets, helicopters, and vintage aircraft, or enjoy the offerings from street food trucks and large beer stands.
Music takes over in the evenings. On Friday, Midnight to Six and Magdeburg's party band Juckreiz will perform. Saturday features a big 90s Party with the cover band Einzig & Artig, and Sunday concludes the weekend with country singer Antje Klann. Street food trucks, carousels, and small fairground attractions turn the festival grounds into a blend of airshow and traditional Volksfest (public festival).
Magdeburg, the state capital of Sachsen-Anhalt, hosts AIR Magdeburg 2026, a major event that will shine far beyond the city limits. Anyone who loves aviation – or simply seeks a well-curated city festival with an unusual backdrop – should mark the last weekend of May 2026.
From May 29 to 31, 2026, the major airport festival AIR Magdeburg will take place at Magdeburg-City Airport. The festival marks the return of a major event after a 16-year break and celebrates the airport's 90th anniversary. The event is organized by the airport itself in cooperation with the City of Magdeburg.
