Three days of mill life around the Bockwindmühle Mathilde
High above the village of Danstedt – part of the municipality of Nordharz in the Harz district – stands the post mill 'Mathilde', one of the few fully functional technical monuments of its kind in Saxony-Anhalt. The mill was built in 1844, restored several times, and is today maintained by the volunteer Mill Association Danstedt and put into operation on special occasions. The most important of these days: the Pentecost Mill Festival, which coincides with the German Mill Day on Whit Monday.
From Whit Saturday to Whit Monday, the mill is open daily from 10 am. The miller guides you through the interior, shows the grinding mechanism in action, and explains the centuries-old technology. In the adjacent bakehouse, the master baker pulls fresh mill bread and sugar cake from the wood-fired oven – both specialties available only this weekend. Also available: lard bread, cheese bread, homemade cakes, coffee, and a local specialty, the 'Danstedter Mühlentrunk'.
Sunday is dedicated to village get-togethers: pea soup for lunch, an appearance by the 'Stallburschen' from Heudeber in the afternoon, and dancing with DJ Ralf Harms in the evening, with food trucks providing refreshments. One of the few opportunities in the Harz foothills to experience a real Pentecost dance night according to old custom.
Monday, the traditional German Mill Day, begins at 10 am with an ecumenical service and brass music right at the mill – a program item that underscores the connection between rural tradition and Christian festival culture. In the afternoon, the folk music band 'Harzwald Echo' plays for coffee and cake before the sails slowly come to rest again.
The Pentecost Mill Festival is more than just an association event: it is a small school of technical history, a piece of living tradition, and a reliable social anchor for the village of Danstedt. Anyone who wants to experience Pentecost authentically in the Harz foothills of Saxony-Anhalt will find one of the most beautiful examples here.
The key dates are set: three days of mill life at Pentecost in Danstedt, organized by the Danstedt Mill Association. Highlights include the performances by the Stallburschen from Heudeber on Sunday afternoon, the Pentecost Sunday evening dance with DJ Ralf Harms, and the ecumenical service on Whit Monday at 10 am. The post mill 'Mathilde' will be demonstrated on all three days.
Danstedt is located between Halberstadt and Wernigerode, about 5 kilometers north of Wernigerode, in the municipality of Nordharz in the Harz district. By car via the A395 (exit Vienenburg) or the B6, then L 84. By train: Wernigerode station, then continue by bus or taxi. Parking available in the village.
Admission to the festival and the mill is free. Food and drinks are charged; proceeds go towards the maintenance of the post mill.
Come hungry – the freshly baked mill bread and sugar cake are the true stars of the festival and usually sell out by the afternoon.
