Traditional Franconian Kerwa around the Feast of the Assumption at Schrauderkeller
The Pettstadt Kirchweih takes place every year around the Feast of the Assumption (August 15th) – making it one of the high-summer Kerwa festivals in the Bamberg region. In 2026, the festival begins on Saturday, August 15th (Feast of the Assumption itself, a public holiday in Bavaria), with the main festival weekend featuring the tree erection on Saturday, the main festival day on Sunday, and winding down in the following days.
The venue is the historic Schrauderkeller in Pettstadt – one of the typical Franconian beer cellars that characterize the Bamberg region. Here, Franconian cuisine is served daily from 11:30 AM, there's live music in the afternoon, and the festival tent program takes over in the evenings. The open, shady atmosphere of the beer cellar tradition makes Pettstadt a particularly relaxed Kerwa experience.
On Saturday, the Kerwäsburschen erect the decorated Kirchweih tree with a large vintage tractor and musical accompaniment from the Pettstadt Brass Band (which belongs to MGV Pettstadt e.V.). The tree erection is one of the central rituals of every Franconian Kerwa and regularly attracts guests from neighboring towns. On Sunday, the brass band plays a 'Frühschoppen' (morning pint) in front of the Schrauderkeller. During the festival days, there will also be a festival parade, a children's carousel, and a varied culinary offer.
Pettstadt is located in the southern district of Bamberg on the Main river, just a few kilometers from the UNESCO World Heritage city of Bamberg. The village has around 1,700 inhabitants and is one of those small Franconian villages where club life significantly shapes the festival calendar. If you want to experience an authentic Franconian Kerwa without touristy staging, this is the place to be.
As in previous years, the Kerwa begins on Saturday afternoon with the tree erection. The Kerwäsburschen bring the decorated Kirchweih tree with a large vintage tractor and musical accompaniment from the Pettstadt Brass Band to the festival grounds and erect it at the Schrauderkeller.
Sunday traditionally focuses on the morning pint ('Frühschoppen') at the cellar, with a concert by the brass band and a well-attended Franconian lunch. On the following days, festival operations continue at the Schrauderkeller, with lunch served from 11:30 AM, live acts in the afternoon, and the festival tent program in the evenings.
Pettstadt is located about 10 km south of Bamberg, accessible via the A73 (exit Bamberg-Süd / Strullendorf), then B505 or country road. By train to Strullendorf or Bamberg, then bus. Parking spaces are signposted on the outskirts of the village.
Free. Food and drinks at the Schrauderkeller at usual Bamberg beer cellar prices: Franconian snacks approx. €6–€8, Schäufele €12–€15, beer 0.5 l approx. €3.80.
