Traditional Volksfest with a market on the Meßplatz and in Blocksbergstraße
The unusual festival name "Grenadier Market" refers to the military history of Pirmasens. In the 18th century, the city was a garrison town for Landgrave Ludwig IX of Hesse-Darmstadt, who stationed a grenadier guard here. The grenadiers – elite soldiers with characteristic fur hats – shaped the cityscape for decades. Their annual exercises and parades attracted onlookers from all over the surrounding area, and from this event, the "Grenadier Market" developed as a permanent market and festival date. The name has been retained to this day – a living testament to Palatinate urban history.
The Meßplatz is the classic festival area of Pirmasens, a spacious paved square that hosts several major events throughout the year. During the Grenadier Market, it fills up with amusement rides (Ferris wheel, carousels, roller coaster), showman's stalls, beer tents, gastronomic stands, and a festival stage. Five days of Volksfest allow for family visits in the early evening as well as the full fairground experience until late at night.
Accompanying this, the Krämermarkt will take place on Monday and Tuesday (September 7th and 8th) in Blocksbergstraße. The Krämermarkt complements the Volksfest with the classic market component: traders sell textiles, household goods, tools, leather goods, souvenirs, sweets, and much more. The format of the Krämermarkt is part of the original Palatinate market tradition and makes the Grenadier Market a classic annual fair in the historical sense.
Pirmasens is Germany's most traditional shoemaking city. For over a century, a significant part of the German shoe industry was based here, and even though structural change has greatly altered the industry, the shoe heritage shapes the city's self-image. The German Shoe Museum, the annual International Shoe Fair, and the "Shoe Mile Walk" through the city center keep this identity alive. The Grenadier Market adds an older, military layer to this self-image.
The Grenadier Market is a classic family Volksfest. Admission to the festival grounds is free; payment is only required for amusement rides and refreshments. Children get their money's worth – carousels, haunted houses, sweets, cotton candy, and the typical fairground atmosphere are part of the regular repertoire.
