Tips
For those who want to experience Franconian Kerwa customs: visit all six Kirchweihen in Stegaurach, from May (Höfen) to September (Mühlendorf). The main Kerwa on the first weekend of July is particularly well-attended – Bamberg is only 15 minutes away and can be combined with a city tour and brewery visit.
Stegaurach Kirchweih as the Main Kerwa
The Stegaurach Kirchweih is the central Kerwa of the municipality of Stegaurach in the Bamberg district. In 2026, it runs from Friday, July 3rd, to Monday, July 6th – traditionally on the first weekend of July.
Six Kerwas per Year
Stegaurach, with its seven districts, maintains an exceptionally dense Kerwa tradition. Six Kirchweihen are spread throughout the year:
- Höfen – May 16–17, 2026
- Kreuzschuh – June 13–14, 2026
- Hartlanden – June 20–22, 2026
- Unteraurach – June 26–29, 2026
- Stegaurach (Main Kerwa) – July 3–6, 2026
- Debring – September 5–7, 2026
- Mühlendorf – September 11–14, 2026
This concentration shows how deeply the Franconian Kerwa tradition is rooted in the Bamberg district – each district cultivates its own Kerwa youth group and its own customs.
Classic Kerwa Choreography
The Stegaurach Kirchweih follows the classic four-day Kerwa choreography of Franconia:
- Friday – Beer tapping ceremony by the mayor, opening in the festival tent with brass music
- Saturday – Raising of the Kerwabaum by the Kerwaboum (fair youth), festival tent program in the evening
- Sunday – Festive church service, followed by a morning pint (Frühschoppen), lunch, and afternoon festival tent activities
- Monday – Betznaustanzn as the traditional "unpacking" dance and conclusion of the festival
Stegaurach Southwest of Bamberg
Stegaurach is a municipality in the Bamberg district, located about 6 kilometers southwest of Bamberg. With its approximately 7,000 inhabitants and seven districts, it is one of the larger municipalities in the Bamberg surrounding area. The proximity to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Bamberg shapes the region's tourist profile, while the numerous Kirchweihen preserve the rural character and active club life.
Franconian Kerwa as Cultural Heritage
The Franconian Kerwa is one of Franconia's most vibrant traditional customs: a four-day festival with a beer tapping ceremony, Kerwabaum, festive church service, and youth group traditions. The Stegaurach Kerwa landscape with its six annual festivals is a special case – a testament to the identity-forming power of this custom in the rural region southwest of Bamberg.
