Traditional four-day Kerwa (fair) of the municipality of Stegaurach in the Bamberg district
The Stegaurach Kirchweih is the central Kerwa of the municipality of Stegaurach in the Bamberg district. In 2026, it runs from Friday, July 3rd, to Monday, July 6th – traditionally on the first weekend of July.
Stegaurach, with its seven districts, maintains an exceptionally dense Kerwa tradition. Six Kirchweihen are spread throughout the year:
This concentration shows how deeply the Franconian Kerwa tradition is rooted in the Bamberg district – each district cultivates its own Kerwa youth group and its own customs.
The Stegaurach Kirchweih follows the classic four-day Kerwa choreography of Franconia:
Stegaurach is a municipality in the Bamberg district, located about 6 kilometers southwest of Bamberg. With its approximately 7,000 inhabitants and seven districts, it is one of the larger municipalities in the Bamberg surrounding area. The proximity to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Bamberg shapes the region's tourist profile, while the numerous Kirchweihen preserve the rural character and active club life.
The Franconian Kerwa is one of Franconia's most vibrant traditional customs: a four-day festival with a beer tapping ceremony, Kerwabaum, festive church service, and youth group traditions. The Stegaurach Kerwa landscape with its six annual festivals is a special case – a testament to the identity-forming power of this custom in the rural region southwest of Bamberg.
