The Frankenthaler Carneval Verein von 1820 e.V. (FCV) is one of the oldest organized carnival associations in Germany and has been shaping the Fastnacht (carnival) traditions of the Palatinate city for over 200 years. The season opening is the starting point of every new campaign and traditionally follows the start of the nationwide carnival season on November 11th.
Significance
The Frankenthal Fastnacht is in the tradition of the Rhenish-influenced carnival strongholds and differs from the predominantly Swabian-Allemannic Fastnacht in other parts of the Palatinate. The FCV is a member of the Bund Deutscher Karneval (Federation of German Carnival) and works closely with associations in the region.
Course of the Season Opening
The opening weekend usually includes an official proclamation, the presentation of the new prince couple or royalty, a first session with 'Büttenreden' (parody speeches), dance troupes, and musical performances, as well as a social gathering afterwards. Participants include the FCV troupes (Große Garde, dance formations, children's troupe), the house band, friendly associations, and the annually elected officials.
Subsequent Campaigns
Following the season opening, numerous other FCV events will take place over the winter: gala sessions, guest sessions, ladies' sessions, the Frankenthal carnival parade on Fastnacht Sunday, the concurrently running carnival market on the town hall square, and the season closing celebration on Ash Wednesday.
