Traditional Munich District Volksfest in Pasing – Warming up for the Wiesn
The Pasinger Vorwiesn is a truly Bavarian folk festival, yet still a hidden gem: While tourist crowds flock to the Theresienwiese at the end of September, Munich-Pasing celebrates its own district folk festival at the end of July. The Vorwiesn has been held for over 100 years – originally as a neighborhood festival for the independent market town of Pasing, which was only incorporated into Munich in 1938, and today as one of the state capital's most charming small folk festivals.
The venue is the Volksfestplatz an der Silberdistelstraße / Weinbergerstraße, directly next to the Max-Planck-Gymnasium. The marquee is accessible and can accommodate up to 2,100 guests – smaller than the big Wiesn tents, but unmistakably cozy. König Ludwig beer is served in the beer garden, and the program features Munich brass and dance music, pretzels, roast chicken, and pork knuckles.
Over the five festival days, the full Vorwiesn program unfolds:
A special feature of the Pasinger Vorwiesn is the official Schafkopf championship on Saturday. Schafkopf is the traditional Bavarian card game, played in numerous Munich pubs and clubs. The Pasinger Vorwiesn is one of the few folk festivals that organizes its own official Schafkopf tournament – with registration, scoring, and prizes for the best players.
Following the actual folk festival, on August 3, there will be a cabaret evening with Django Asül – the Bavarian comedian presents his latest program. Tickets approx. €34, doors open 6 PM, show starts 8 PM.
Unlike commercial mainstream folk festivals, the Pasinger Vorwiesn is organized voluntarily by the District Committee Pasing-Obermenzing and local clubs. This shapes its family-friendly character: no VIP boxes, no overpriced tickets, but a neighborhood district festival aimed at residents of Pasing and Munich from all areas.
In 2026, the Pasinger Vorwiesn will again open its doors from the last weekend of July to the beginning of August. The marquee will be accessible as always, and the program follows the proven mix of folk festival, district celebration, and Munich Schafkopf culture.
Bavarian brass music, König Ludwig beer on tap, roast chicken, pretzels, pork knuckles, amusement rides for the little ones, a cozy beer garden, and the typical volunteer spirit of Pasing. For those who don't want to go to the Theresienwiese every year, this offers a family-friendly alternative.
