Triathlon in the "Hawaii of the North" — Long distance on the Flensburg Fjord
The OstseeMan in Glücksburg on the Flensburg Fjord is a unique event in the German triathlon scene. It is the only triathlon in Germany contested over the full long distance with open-water swimming in the sea: 3.8 km swimming, 180 km cycling, and 42.195 km running — exactly the Ironman distance. The organizers themselves call the region the "Hawaii of the North" for good reason.
In addition to the long distance, the OstseeMan offers three other formats:
Both distances can also be completed as a relay (swimming / cycling / running divided among three athletes).
The venue is Sandwig beach in Glücksburg. This is where the transition zone is located, as well as the start and finish. The entire town in the Schleswig-Flensburg district transforms into a festival mile on the event weekend: spectators line the course, live music, food and drink, and family entertainment accompany the competitions. A fireworks display on the beach concludes the event.
The OstseeMan annually attracts around 1,500 athletes from 15 nations to the fjord. The middle distance is the largest field with approximately 800 individual starters and 450 relay participants, while the long distance remains the prestigious main race for around 200 individual athletes plus 150 relays. Both events have been mandatory dates in the calendars of North German triathletes for years.
The OstseeMan has focused on sustainability for years. A tree is planted for every registration — most recently, 100 saplings were planted in Süderlügum, each symbolically linked to registrations from the previous year. Main partner sebamed underscores its profile as a sports and lifestyle event.
The OstseeMan 2026 will be held over two days: Saturday, August 1, 2026, and Sunday, August 2, 2026. The highlight is the long-distance swim start on Sunday at 06:45 AM in the Flensburg Fjord at Sandwig beach.
The 2026 edition is sold out. Athletes who still wish to participate can find places from athletes giving up their starting eligibility on the official starting place exchange at time2win.at.
For the 2026 edition, sebamed joins the festival as the new main partner. Additionally, the OstseeMan will host the State Championship of the SHTU (Schleswig-Holstein Triathlon Association) for the middle distance.
