Franconian district Kärwa in Nuremberg Southwest
Nuremberg, Bavaria's second-largest city, cultivates a distinct district Kirchweih culture: around 40 different Kärwen are celebrated every year from the end of April to September in its various districts. Each Kärwa has its own character, its own traditions, its own festival committee – "each 'Kärwa' has its very own character, just like the districts themselves," as the City of Nuremberg itself puts it. The Großreuth Kärwa is one of the firmly established district Kirchweihen in the southwest.
Großreuth near Schweinau is a district in southern Nuremberg, located on the border with the neighboring district of Schweinau and not to be confused with Großreuth behind the Veste in the north. Despite its incorporation into Nuremberg in the 19th century, the district has partially retained its village character – the Kärwa is an expression of this still-vibrant district identity.
The venue is the festival grounds on Alte Wallensteinstraße – a permanently established event space used for the annual Kärwa and occasional other district festivals. It accommodates a festival tent, rides, carousels, and food stalls. The typical elements of a Franconian Kärwa are all present: the decorated Kärwabaum, beer from local breweries, Franconian specialties, and live music in the festival tent.
The Franconian Kärwa (short for "Kirchweih") differs from the Bavarian Kirta through its own customs: the erection and dancing around the Kärwabaum, the "Plantanzer" (traditional dancers), and the "burial" of the Kärwa at the end of the festival. In Großreuth, the festival committee and district associations uphold these traditions – an important identity-forming event in the district's calendar, supported by the voluntary work of the residents.
From Friday, June 19, to Monday, June 22, 2026, the Nuremberg district of Großreuth near Schweinau will celebrate its traditional Kärwa at the Alte Wallensteinstraße festival grounds. The event is organized by the City of Nuremberg via the Real Estate Department, supplemented by the local festival committee.
The program follows the classic Franconian Kerwa schedule: opening ceremony with beer tapping on Friday, main festival day with Kärwabaum dancing on Saturday, "Frühschoppen" (morning pint) on Sunday, and the festival's conclusion on Monday. The detailed program will be published on nuernberg.de before the festival.
