Osterfeuer Elmenhorst

About the Event

The Osterfeuer (Easter bonfire) is one of the oldest traditional festivals in many villages in Northern Germany. It symbolically marks the driving away of winter and is rooted in both pre-Christian and Christian traditions. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and especially in the Vorpommern-Rügen district, the Osterfeuer is a firm fixture in the spring calendar – in Elmenhorst, it is officially listed as a community event.

Schedule and Atmosphere

The festival begins in the late afternoon or early evening. Families from the village and the region gather at the festival grounds before the fire is lit. The grounds feature:

• a craft station for children with Easter and spring motifs
• a visit from the Easter Bunny
• catering with bratwurst, drinks, and usually cake
• the actual Osterfeuer, which is maintained until the late evening

The atmosphere is familial, calm, and strongly community-oriented. Unlike the large Easter bonfires on Rügen or on the Baltic Sea coast, the festival does not have supra-regional appeal; this is precisely what makes it an unadulterated customs event.

Regional Context

Elmenhorst is located in the Vorpommern-Rügen district, in the hinterland between Grimmen and Greifswald. The region is predominantly agricultural and belongs to the most traditional Osterfeuer landscapes in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The festival is supported by the municipality of Elmenhorst together with the Elmenhorst volunteer fire brigade, which is responsible for setup, fire watch, and safety.

Who Organizes the Festival

The Elmenhorst volunteer fire brigade (ff-elmenhorst.de) traditionally handles the majority of the work: wood collection, setup, fire watch, catering. The municipality provides the grounds and handles the official registration in the event calendar.
