A Lünen Easter Tradition with a Modern Twist

The Osterfeuer (Easter bonfire) has been part of Easter tradition in the Münsterland and Ruhr area for centuries: on Holy Saturday or Easter Sunday, large piles of wood are lit to symbolically drive away the winter cold and celebrate the new light of the spring season. This tradition is also maintained in Lünen-Alstedde, the northern district of the city on the Lippe river — in a modernized, safety-conscious form.

On Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026, from 5:30 PM, BW Alstedde (Ballspielverein Alstedde) invites you to the traditional Easter bonfire on the club's own sports field at Am Heikenberg 20. The date corresponds to the 2026 Easter calendar — Easter Sunday falls on April 5 in 2026. The event begins at dusk and continues for several hours into the early evening.

Easter Illumination with Fire Bowls and Swedish Fire Logs

Instead of a classic large woodpile, BW Alstedde opts for a modern variant of the custom:

• Fire Bowls — several smaller fires in cast-iron bowls distributed across the grounds
• Swedish Fire Logs — vertically upright logs with a burning shaft in the middle (typical Nordic custom)
• Atmospheric Easter Illumination — the combination of fire sources lends the grounds a warm, almost magical lighting

This variant reduces risks of flying sparks and is more environmentally friendly than a single large fire. It is particularly suitable for families with small children, who can approach the individual fires safely.

Neighborhood Easter Bonfire in Northern Lünen

Lünen-Alstedde is one of several Lünen districts with its own Easter bonfire — the Lünen tradition also includes Easter bonfires in Niederaden, Brambauer, Gahmen, and Wethmar. Each district bonfire has its own character; the one by BW Alstedde is one of the cozier and more family-friendly formats. The official registration with the City of Lünen for 2026 has been completed.

BW Alstedde — Ballspielverein Alstedde is the central sports club in northern Lünen, with classic sections for football, tennis, and more. The Easter bonfire is one of its traditional club events, through which the club fosters community life and raises funds for its activities — through catering on the day, not through entrance fees.
