The Instrument
The organ in Basedow village church was built between 1680 and 1683 by Samuel Gercke from Güstrow. It is considered the oldest surviving Baroque organ in Mecklenburg; research suggests that the famous organ builder Arp Schnitger may also have been involved in the instrument. Between 1980 and 1983, the organ underwent extensive restoration and has since been particularly suited for works from the circle of Bach. Today, it is counted among the sixty most important organs in Europe.
Concert Series
The concert series was launched in 1994 to keep the North German organ music school alive. Organists from Germany and abroad — including Klaus Eichhorn (Berlin), Łukasz Mosur (Poland), and Liene Kalnciema (Latvia) — regularly perform in Basedow. The concerts always begin at 5:00 PM and last about an hour.
Local Context
Basedow is located in the Mecklenburg Lake District on Lake Kummerow, nestled within a Lenné park landscape. The manor and village church form a remarkable ensemble of brick architecture. The concert series makes Basedow a pilgrimage site for lovers of historical organ music, combining rural church music with an international standard.
