Four days of city festival with funfair, flea market, open Sunday shopping, and fireworks on Monday evening
If you're looking for a district in Leverkusen that still functions like its own small town, head to Opladen. With over 26,000 inhabitants, Opladen is one of Leverkusen's largest districts — and the only one that was an independent town until 1975 (before being incorporated into the growing city of Leverkusen). You can feel this distinct tradition at the Opladen City Festival: it's not a big-city event, but a genuine small-town folk festival with a funfair, market stalls, and live music.
The city festival enters its 53rd edition in 2026 — an unbroken tradition since the 1970s. For over five decades, the AktionsGemeinschaft Opladen has developed, expanded, and adapted the festival to changing times. Today, it is one of the most reliable dates in Leverkusen's summer calendar, regularly attracting tens of thousands of visitors.
Friday, July 24, 2026, opens the city festival — setting up the funfair, first stage acts, live concerts in the evening. Saturday, July 25, is the main visitor day with full operation of all stalls, funfair rides, and concerts. Sunday, July 26, is open Sunday shopping in the Opladen pedestrian zone — shops open in addition to the festival activities. Simultaneously, a large flea market takes place in the pedestrian zone. Monday, July 27, concludes with Family Day, ending in the evening with grand fireworks over Opladener Platz.
On Opladener Platz and along the Kölner Straße / Bahnhofstraße pedestrian zone, there are funfair rides: Ferris wheel, bumper cars, chain carousel, wave flyer, carousels for children, bungee trampoline, shooting galleries, and lottery stalls. In addition, around 60 market stalls offer bratwurst, potato pancakes, fries, crêpes, almonds, gingerbread, sweets, jewelry, leather goods, and crafts. The stage at Opladener Platz features local bands during the day and semi-famous acts in the evening.
The large flea market on Sunday, July 26, is an attraction in itself. Private sellers line up their tables in the closed-off pedestrian zone — offering clothing, books, toys, household items, antiques, and collectibles. For flea market fans in the region between Cologne and Düsseldorf, Opladen is one of the most important Sunday dates in July.
The highlight is the grand closing fireworks on Monday evening, July 27 — typically around 10:30 PM (as soon as it gets dark). The fireworks are launched from Opladener Platz and are visible from the entire city center. Several thousand visitors come specifically for the fireworks and gather on the square and surrounding city areas.
The organizer is the AktionsGemeinschaft Opladen e.V. (AGO) — the local business and economic association of the district. The AGO coordinates the festival, secures permits, acquires sponsorships, and mediates between the city administration, retailers, and showmen. Thus, the city festival serves as both a folk festival and district economic promotion — the business association sends a clear signal for a vibrant Opladen city center.
The 2026 edition continues the 50+ year tradition of the Opladen City Festival. With a funfair, live music, market stalls, and the traditional fireworks on Monday evening, the festival offers four days of folk festival program around Opladener Platz and the pedestrian zone. The highlight is the open Sunday shopping with a flea market.
