Bergisches Christmas Village in the Leverkusen-Opladen pedestrian zone in front of St. Aloysius
The Opladener Weihnachtsdorf is one of the largest Christmas markets in the Leverkusen city area. With the subtitle "Bergisches Dorf" (Bergisch Village), the market deliberately plays on regional identity: the stalls are designed in the style of Bergisch half-timbered houses, and the lighting evokes a winter dream in the Bergisches Land. From November 19 to December 30, 2026, the program runs throughout the Opladen pedestrian zone.
The St. Aloysius Chapel in the Opladen city center serves as the historic backdrop for the main stage. Against this setting, choirs and live music ensembles perform alternately — an atmospheric connection between sacred architecture and Advent carols.
The market promotes itself with the three-part motto "Feasting, Toasting, and Shopping":
The stage in front of St. Aloysius Chapel will host a program of live music (bands, solo artists) and choirs (local and regional ensembles) over the six weeks. A concentrated music program, especially on Advent Sundays.
Until the municipal reorganization in 1975, Opladen was an independent city — today it is the largest district of Leverkusen (North Rhine-Westphalia). With a historic city center, an attractive pedestrian zone, and its own train station (RB and RE connections), Opladen has a vibrant urban life. The Christmas market leverages this identity by using Bergisch tradition (Leverkusen is on the western edge of the Bergisches Land) as a marketing brand.
With a run time of over six weeks, the Opladener Weihnachtsdorf is one of the longest Christmas markets in the Rhineland — the period extends from the weekend before Advent (Nov 19) to between Christmas and New Year (Dec 30). This creates an Advent season with a consistent market atmosphere throughout all four Advent Sundays and the days between the years.
The market runs through the entire Advent season until between the years. Sunday shopping on Dec 6.
Detailed program: lust-auf-leverkusen.de.
Free admission. Food, drinks, and market items are subject to charge.
Train: Leverkusen-Opladen station (RB 48, RE 5, RE 8), approx. 5 min. walk to the pedestrian zone. By car: A3 exit Leverkusen-Opladen, parking garages in the city center.
Completely free. Food, drinks, and market items are subject to charge.
Nov 19–Dec 30, 2026. Detailed daily opening hours will be published in the weeks before the start on lust-auf-leverkusen.de.
The Sunday shopping event on Dec 6 (St. Nicholas Day) combines the market with city center shopping — the stalls complement the shops and create a seamless weekend experience. The weather in the Bergisches region is often damp and cold — if you want to experience the market in the evening with its lights, bring a hat and scarf.
