Baptism with real Weser river water on Bremen's Weser beach
It's a special sight: Under the open sky, with feet in the sand and a view of the Weser river, people of all ages are baptized at the Open-Air Baptism Festival at Café Sand – with real Weser river water. The Weser beach on Stadtwerder, opposite Bremen's Old Town, is one of the city's most beautiful locations and serves as the backdrop for this baptism festival day. Starting in the morning, families can register at the pavilion and find out at which of the several stations in or by the water the baptism will take place; after a joint opening, the baptism candidates spread out along the river.
Children, teenagers, and adults from all over Bremen who wish to be baptized are explicitly invited – regardless of which parish they belong to. The service is accompanied by live music on the stage of the mobile church. As a memento of this day, baptized children receive a baptismal candle and an age-appropriate Bible edition. Afterwards, families celebrate together: with their own picnic on the beach or with coffee and cake, and lemonade for the children. A joint preparatory meeting takes place beforehand.
The Baptism Festival at Café Sand is part of a city-wide network of open-air baptism festivals, to which parishes of the Bremische Evangelische Kirche invite people at various locations throughout the state of Bremen – by the water, in the park, or in the north of Bremen. The Weser river water baptism is supported by the WeserSegen service center. In a port and river city like Bremen, it makes sense to bring baptism to the water: an open, low-threshold offer that combines Hanseatic church tradition and city life on the Weser riverbank – experience shows that several hundred guests come to the beach.
After a joint opening, the baptisms will take place at several stations along the Weser. The parishes Horn, Unser Lieben Frauen, St. Ansgarii, St. Petri Dom, and the WeserSegen service center are participating. Registration is via the online form on kirche-bremen.de until May 3, 2026; a preparatory meeting will be held on April 25, 2026. The festival is part of the Bremen Open-Air Baptism Festivals on May 30/31, 2026.
