Christmas on the Market Square
The Offenburg Christmas Market is one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in the Ortenau region. Organized by Offenburg Marketing in collaboration with the city, the market traditionally runs from mid-November to December 23 — the exact start date for 2026 will be communicated in the weeks before the market. The market square, with its historic town hall, sandstone-red cityscape, and the Heilig-Kreuz Church rising behind it, forms the backdrop for the Advent festivities.
Over 40 Stalls, Ice Rink, Carousel
More than 40 stalls populate the market square: handicrafts (wood, ceramics, jewelry, leather goods, candles), Christmas decorations, regional food products (Black Forest ham, cheese, honey, brandies from the Ortenau region). An ice rink invites you to go ice skating — rental skates are available. A children's carousel spins its rounds, and the giant Christmas tree in the center of the market square sparkles with thousands of lights.
Culinary Delights and Atmosphere
At the mulled wine stands, classic mulled wine, white mulled wine, egg punch, and the typical Offenburg "Heißer Hugo" (with elderflower syrup) are served. Accompanied by gingerbread from regional bakeries, roasted chestnuts, candied almonds, and Baden specialties such as Flammkuchen, Black Forest sausages, and Black Forest gateau. The atmosphere is familial — the size of the market square prevents overcrowding, and the historic cityscape enhances the mood.
Offenburg — Capital of the Ortenau
Offenburg, with a population of just under 60,000, is the district capital of the Ortenau district and is considered the economic and cultural center of the Ortenau region on the western edge of the Black Forest. The city is known for its sparkling wine cellars, its publishing history (Hubert Burda Media), and its hotel heritage around the market square. Offenburg is directly accessible by ICE/IC train from Karlsruhe and Basel — making the Christmas market an attractive day trip destination.
