Rhinegau wine festival at the 275-year-old loading crane directly on the Rhine
Oestrich's most striking structure is the historic loading crane directly on the Rhine — a wooden treadwheel crane that has stood by the river for over 275 years. In the 18th century, monks from the Eberbach Monastery used it to load wine barrels onto ships for worldwide transport. Today, the crane is a central landmark of the Rhinegau and gives the festival its name.
The Kranfest in its current form originated from an idea by former Rhinegau Wine Queen Michaela Eser. She wanted to make the landmark the anchor of a modern wine festival that combines history and family atmosphere with music and enjoyment. Since 2022, the format has established itself as a firm annual tradition and is constantly evolving.
On the Rhine meadows around the crane, over ten Oestrich and Winkel vintners serve their wines: Riesling from the legendary Oestricher Lenchen, from Doosberg, and from Klosterberg. Spätburgunder and cuvées are also available. The wine selection is complemented by international specialties from regional restaurateurs, ranging from tapas and Asian cuisine to classic Rhinegau home cooking.
A special feature is the opportunity to visit the historic crane: on Sunday from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, the interior is open, and on Friday and Saturday, guided tours are offered from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, telling the story of the wine trade along the Rhine.
Sunday is Family Day: local clubs, businesses, and volunteers organize an extensive children's program — bouncy castle, Bobby car races, craft stations, face painting, water games, and canoe fun on the Rhine. This makes the Kranfest intentionally family-friendly, unlike purely adult wine festivals.
In the evening, the crane is illuminated with a special lighting, giving the festival setting a unique character. Live bands from the region play on stage, and DJs keep the atmosphere lively late into the evening.
The fifth edition since its reformatting in 2022. The program spans three days with a classic wine evening atmosphere on Friday and Saturday, and a distinct family day on Sunday. Exact band announcements will be made shortly before the festival on kranfest.de.
Free admission. Wine tasting €3–5 per glass, food prices vary by stand. Most children's festival activities are free.
