Over 300 rose varieties and 10,000 rose bushes in the wine and rose city on the Rhine
Eltville am Rhein is Hesse's official Rose City – a title well-earned with tens of thousands of blooming rose bushes in public spaces, on house walls, and in the gardens of the city center. The roses bloom particularly magnificently twice a year: in June during the Rose Days and in autumn for the late bloom.
On the first June weekend of 2026, the wine and rose city celebrates its main bloom: Over 300 rose varieties and more than 10,000 rose bushes transform the city into 'a breathtaking sea of colors and scents'. The program is spread across the Electoral Castle, Rhine promenade, Platz der deutschen Einheit, Mediathek, pedestrian zone, Rheingauer Straße, and Gutenbergstraße.
The main attraction is the Electoral Castle – a late medieval castle complex on the Rhine promenade with magnificent rose gardens. Guided rose garden tours take place on Saturday at 2 PM and 5 PM, and Sunday at 11 AM.
On the Platz der deutschen Einheit, you'll find the Rheingau Lounge: local bands, Eltville vintners with wine tasting stands, and sparkling wine cellars from the Rheingau. A morning pint concert kicks off each festival day.
Parallel to the Rose Festival, there's a shopping weekend in Eltville's city center: Fashion boutiques, accessory stands, arts and crafts. In the Mediathek, there's a family program with readings, workshops, and hands-on activities for children.
Eltville am Rhein in the Rheingau-Taunus district has around 17,000 inhabitants and has been officially known as Hesse's 'Rose City' since 1989. Connected with Riesling cultivation in the Rheingau and the baroque castle, Eltville is a prime tourist destination on the Middle Rhine route.
The Eltville Electoral Castle is a late medieval castle complex from the 14th century and was the residence of the Mainz Archbishops. Today, it houses a printing exhibition dedicated to Johannes Gutenberg, a contemporary of Gutenberg who worked here, and the famous rose gardens with over 300 varieties. During the Rose Days, all garden areas are open for viewing.
