Concert series in the baroque monastery church — from the Stuttgart Chamber Choir to the Organist of Notre-Dame
The Obermarchtal Minster Concerts are among the finest sacred music concert series in Baden-Württemberg. Experience them in one of Upper Swabia's most beautiful sacred spaces: the former Premonstratensian Minster, one of the region's richest baroque structures. The Friends of Sacred Music and Monastic Culture Obermarchtal carefully curates the program, bringing top-tier soloists and ensembles to the small Danube community in the Alb-Danube district each year.
The 2026 program features eight dates between May and October. The opening on May 25 is an a cappella evening with the renowned Stuttgart Chamber Choir under Prof. Frieder Bernius. On June 13, monastic culture connects with Obermarchtal's 1250th parish anniversary with the performance "Der Fall Luzifers" (The Fall of Lucifer). On August 2, trumpeter Kuno Högerle and organist Gregor Simon will perform a festive trumpet concert.
Three consecutive Sundays in September are dedicated to the queen of instruments. On September 13, house organist Gregor Simon opens the series. On September 20, Prof. Jean-Pierre Leguay, titular organist of Notre-Dame de Paris, travels to Obermarchtal — an international star guest that few parishes of this size can welcome. On September 27, Italian organist Christian Tarabbia from Arona concludes the series. Already on August 16, Prof. Vincent Bernhardt performed works from Germany, France, and Italy. The grand finale in 2026 on October 24 features the Oberschwaben Concert Choir with "Jubilate".
The small Danube community in the Alb-Danube district celebrates its 1250th anniversary in 2026. The Obermarchtal Minster — built from 1686 as the former collegiate church of the Imperial Premonstratensian Abbey — forms the ideal spatial and symbolic center of this jubilee. The Vorarlberg school of architecture (Christian Thumb, Michael Thumb, Franz Beer) shaped the interior, and the stucco work comes from Johann Schmuzer of Wessobrunn. This created a total work of art of baroque church architecture, lending exceptional acoustic and visual depth to every concert.
What makes the Obermarchtal Minster Concerts special is the blend of regional roots and international appeal. Renowned ensembles like the Stuttgart Chamber Choir alternate with local choirs and brass ensembles, while international organists from Paris's Notre-Dame or Italian cathedrals perform alongside the region's house organists. Admission is moderate (€10–€20, with discounts for students and pupils), and pupils are sometimes admitted free of charge.
The 2026 season of the Obermarchtal Minster Concerts runs from April to October. Eight concerts bring together international soloists and regional ensembles in the baroque Minster of the Danube community. The highlight is the 14th Organ September with three Sunday concerts — including a performance by the organist of Paris's Notre-Dame, Prof. Jean-Pierre Leguay, on September 20.
The program combines chamber choir music, organ artistry, festive concerts, and a connection to the 1250th parish anniversary. Admission prices between €10 and €20 keep the series attractive for families and young audiences.
