A week of charcoal burner tradition at the Kohlenmeilerplatz – the kiln burns day and night, folk festival, sale of charcoal on the last day
The Köhlerwoche Erfweiler is one of the most extraordinary traditional events in the Palatinate Forest. It showcases the old technique of charcoal production for a week, which was an important craft in the region for centuries. The Köhlerwoche is organized by the Verkehrsverein Erfweiler (Erfweiler Tourist Association), which is dedicated to preserving local traditions and promoting tourism.
The charcoal burner's craft – the production of charcoal in a kiln – was a central craft in the Palatinate Forest for centuries. The iron and glassworks of the region required large quantities of charcoal as fuel; the wood from the dense mixed forests of the Palatinate provided the raw material. The process is demanding: a conical pile of wood is covered with earth and moss, ignited from within, and slowly smoldered for several days in the absence of air. The charcoal burners monitor the kiln day and night, regulate the air supply, and decide when the kiln has finished burning.
The centerpiece of the Erfweiler Köhlerwoche is a real charcoal kiln at the Kohlenmeilerplatz. It is built at the beginning of the week, lit around midnight, and then continuously monitored for days. Visitors can watch the charcoal burners at work, talk to them, and understand the technique. This is of museum-like interest and at the same time an authentic experience of an almost forgotten craft.
Parallel to the kiln, there is a festive accompanying program: stalls with catering from local clubs, live music, children's activities, lectures on the history of the charcoal burner's craft and the Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve. The atmosphere combines the fascination of the kiln with a convivial festival atmosphere.
On the last day, the kiln is dismantled, and the produced charcoal is sold on-site. Those who are lucky can get a bag of authentically produced Palatinate charcoal – a valuable souvenir and excellent grilling material at the same time.
The 2026 edition continues the charcoal burner tradition. The exact program for 2026 will be published by the Verkehrsverein Erfweiler in the spring. The structure will follow the proven key points of previous years.
