Four-day Danube bank Volksfest by the Stadtkapelle Munderkingen — featuring a Trucker Meet, Public Viewing, and the fabulous Danube Slide as the highlight
The Munderkingen Summer Festival is one of the most traditional civic festivals on the upper reaches of the Danube. The Stadtkapelle Munderkingen e.V. has been organizing the festival for over seven decades on the first weekend in July — in 2026, the 73rd edition runs from Friday, July 3rd to Monday, July 6th. Four festival days on the Danube bank make the weekend one of the busiest Volksfest dates in the Alb-Donau district.
The trademark of the Summer Festival is the Donaurutsch (Danube Slide) — a humorous raft race on the Danube, where teams from Munderkingen clubs, circles of friends, and year groups launch self-built watercraft into the water and maneuver against the current. The creativity in the construction of the rafts — from bathtubs with outboard motors to multi-story wooden structures and themed rafts (Pirate, Viking, Astronaut) — and the humorous show on the water make the Danube Slide the visual highlight of every festival weekend.
The large festival tent of the Stadtkapelle forms the musical center of the festival. Saturday traditionally brings the party night with the brass band ANSATZLOS — a Southern German brass band very popular with young adults, known for modern crossover arrangements (advance tickets typically €5). In parallel, the Trucker Meet takes place: trucks from the region and Switzerland drive onto the festival grounds and are admired by the public — a Southern German Volksfest classic that has been established since the 1990s.
During major sporting events (Football World Cup, European Championship, every 2 years), Public Viewing takes place in the festival tent — a communal viewing event for hundreds of spectators. The Jahrgängerfeier (Year Group Reunion, typically on Sunday afternoon) brings together the graduating year groups of Munderkingen schools — a local custom with a ceremonial speech by the mayor. The Sunday morning opens with the classic Frühschoppen with brass music.
Munderkingen, with around 5,600 inhabitants, is a small town in the Alb-Donau district in the state of Baden-Württemberg, located on the banks of the Danube between Ehingen and Riedlingen. The town is one of the oldest Danube towns in Baden-Württemberg — with preserved medieval town fortifications and a historic Danube bridge. The Stadtkapelle, alongside the sports club, fire department, and traditional costume groups, is one of the defining associations. The Summer Festival with the Danube Slide is the town's identification event of the year — more widely known than many large festival formats.
The 73rd edition of the Summer Festival follows the proven format: Friday opening with festival tent, Saturday program with Trucker Meet, Danube Slide, and party night, Sunday family day with Frühschoppen and Year Group Reunion, Monday closing. The Stadtkapelle Munderkingen has been organizing the festival in the same format for over seven decades — remarkable consistency in the Southern German festival calendar.
The Danube Slide is the unmistakable highlight. Teams from Munderkingen clubs, circles of friends, and year groups build their rafts weeks before the festival — and then compete against the current on the Danube. The humorous element predominates; the sporting competition is secondary. Thousands of spectators line the Danube bank.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Advance tickets for the ANSATZLOS party night typically €5. Danube Slide, Trucker Meet, Frühschoppen, and Year Group Reunion are free of charge. Consumption at the festival tent catering at market prices.
By car via the B 311 (Ulm — Tuttlingen), exit Munderkingen. By train via the Donautalbahn (Ulm — Sigmaringen) to Munderkingen station, from there a few minutes' walk to the Danube bank and festival grounds.
Expected Friday, July 3rd to Monday, July 6th, 2026 (first weekend in July, as tradition dictates). Exact daily programs and Danube Slide times will be published on stadtkapelle-munderkingen.de and in the Swabian press.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Advance tickets for the ANSATZLOS party night typically €5. Danube Slide, Trucker Meet, Frühschoppen, and Year Group Reunion are free of charge.
