Experimental festival for noise and electronic sound art at Freiland Potsdam
NU:SUB — distributed noise is an experimental music festival focusing on noise, electronic sound art, and conceptual music. The festival is organized by the association artifact e.V., one of the most important independent initiatives in Potsdam's sound art and experimental music scene. In 2026, NU:SUB is part of the official festival funding of the state capital Potsdam — alongside FIESTA TOTALE (also artifact) and 13 other funded festivals.
The venue is Freiland Potsdam, a socio-cultural center southwest of the city center — a former railway site, an important hotspot of Brandenburg's alternative cultural scene. With stages, a hall, outdoor areas, a bar, and workshops, Freiland is the natural resonance space for a festival that treats sound as material. The program focuses on live performances, often in 360° setups, featuring artists from Germany and the European independent circuit.
The subtitle "distributed noise" refers to the aesthetic program: sound is not sent centrally from a PA system but is spatially distributed — via multiple speaker islands, in several rooms simultaneously, sometimes in mobile setups. The audience moves between sound zones instead of standing directly in front of a stage. The format is a homage to composers like Iannis Xenakis, Pauline Oliveros, or the Berlin complex of the field recording and drone scene.
The exact date for 2026 will be announced by the organizer soon. Based on experience, the festival takes place on a weekend in late summer or autumn; confirmation will be provided via the Freiland website and artifact e.V.'s social media channels. A note: The festival funding of the state capital Potsdam (overview of all 15 funded festivals 2026) confirms the funding, the specific event date will follow within the current year.
While Potsdam is primarily identified with Sanssouci and its UNESCO World Heritage backdrop for tourism, the Brandenburg state capital has a distinct independent scene: Freiland, Waschhaus, fabrik Potsdam, and several smaller collectives maintain an independent program of independent theater, dance, sound art, and electronic music. NU:SUB is part of this network.
