Bavaria's second-largest Volksfest at Dutzendteich – 1.6 million visitors
The Nürnberger Herbstvolksfest at the Volksfestplatz am Dutzendteich is one of the largest Volksfeste in Bavaria after Munich's Oktoberfest – around 1.6 million visitors in just 17 days. The organizer is the Süddeutscher Verband reisender Schausteller- und Handelsbetriebe e.V., which has been organizing the festival in its current form twice a year for decades (Frühlingsfest in April + Herbstvolksfest in late summer).
The 18-hectare festival grounds feature large tents and numerous smaller beer tents. Franconian breweries are represented – primarily Tucher and Lederer – along with the Augustiner-Zeltbar as a Munich accent. The range of amusement rides covers the full spectrum: a Ferris wheel with a view of the Frankenstadion, roller coasters, a free-fall tower, a chain carousel, bumper cars, and classic family rides like the swing boat, haunted house, and children's carousel.
Wednesdays are Family Days: many rides offer a 50% discount, and many food stalls also offer special prices. In addition, there are regular fireworks displays – traditional highlights that are set off over the Dutzendteich and are visible from the neighboring park.
Classic Volksfest cuisine characterizes the offerings: Nürnberger Bratwürste (the city's specialty), grilled fish on a stick, roast chicken, pretzels, gingerbread hearts, roasted almonds, crêpes, churros, langos, and beer in liter steins. In the beer tents, brass bands, schlager bands, and dance bands play, along with party music in the classic large Volksfest tents.
The festival grounds are located in the south of Nuremberg between Bayernstraße, Nailaer Straße, and Ernst-Reuter-Straße, directly on the Dutzendteich park. The location on the former Reichsparteitagsgelände – with the Documentation Center, Meistersingerhalle, and Max-Morlock-Stadion (Frankenstadion) as neighbors – is now newly shaped by the Volksfest, recreational area, and cultural buildings. Nuremberg, with around 530,000 inhabitants, is Bavaria's second-largest city after Munich, and maintains a Volksfest tradition dating back to the 19th century.
The 2026 autumn edition marks the traditional late-summer highlight of the Franconian event calendar. Opening on Friday, August 28, with the first beer tapping in the large tents – followed by two and a half weeks of Volksfest activities. The closing on September 13 will feature the grand finale fireworks display as usual.
The fixed program points include: Family Day every Wednesday with half-price discounts on many rides, several fireworks displays over the Dutzendteich (dates to be published by the organizer in August), bratwurst competitions in the beer tents, vintage car meet-ups, and entertainment evenings with Volksfest bands. The major breweries Tucher and Lederer provide the Franconian festival beers, while the Augustiner-Zeltbar offers the Munich contrast.
