Neighborhood Christmas market around St. Josef Church in Bonn-Beuel
Beuel is one of Bonn's four city districts and is — uniquely — located on the right bank of the Rhine, opposite Bonn's old town. Around 68,000 inhabitants, its own identity, its own history: until 1969, Beuel was an independent city, only then was it incorporated into Bonn. Characteristic: the district is known for its Weiberfastnachts-Karneval (Women's Carnival on Thursday), the Beuel washerwomen, and a strong sense of neighborhood patriotism. Life here feels more village-like than in Bonn's city center — ideal conditions for a neighborhood Christmas market with local flair.
The St. Josef Church on Hermannstraße is one of Beuel's prominent parish churches. Its forecourt, along with the upper section of Hermannstraße, forms the natural setting for the Nikolausmarkt — the stalls line the pedestrian zone, with the church tower as a visual anchor. This combination of sacred space and Christmas market is classic in the Rhineland and lends the event that cozy, almost old-town character that large city center markets often lose.
The Nikolausmarkt Beuel is a classic neighborhood Christmas market: mulled wine stalls, bratwurst, potato pancakes, regional products, Rhineland handicrafts, small gift ideas, cookies, and gingerbread. Over the three days, there will be musical contributions from local choirs and associations, often with a visit from St. Nicholas for the children. The atmosphere is familiar — Beuel residents meet Beuel residents, the market is a neighborhood meeting point.
Bonn is one of North Rhine-Westphalia's most beautiful cities during Advent: the large Christmas market in the city center from mid-November with over 160 stalls around Münsterplatz, Beethoven Monument, and Sterntorbrücke, the Dreikönigsmarkt (Three Kings' Market) after Christmas — and nestled among them, the smaller neighborhood markets like the Nikolausmarkt Beuel. Visitors to Bonn during Advent can ideally combine an afternoon in the old town with an evening visit to Beuel.
Worthwhile stops in the district: the Beuel Rhine promenade with views of Bonn's old town and the Siebengebirge, the Kennedy Bridge connecting to Bonn's city center, the Brückenforum for district history, the Schiffer- und Wäscherinnenbrunnen (Boatmen and Washerwomen Fountain). During Carnival (Weiberfastnacht), all of Beuel celebrates — and in Advent, the Nikolausmarkt is the district's small, charming answer to the city center's glamour.
The Nikolausmarkt Beuel is part of the official Bonn Christmas Market program 2026, alongside the large market in the city center and the Dreikönigsmarkt. Character: small, familiar, neighborhood-focused — the counter-model to the large city center market.
