Kurdish Spring and Family Festival in Neukölln
Yekmal e.V. is a Kurdish cultural and educational association, founded in 1993 in Berlin. Among other things, the association operates two bilingual childcare facilities (Kurdish/German) and has been organizing a regular program of language courses, cultural events, workshops, and political education formats for three decades. Its annual Newroz Family Festival is one of the most important Berlin dates for the Kurdish diaspora, alongside the larger Newroz events at Tempelhofer Feld and the Humboldt Forum.
The venue for the 2026 edition is the Spore Initiative at Hermannstraße 86 in the Neukölln district. The Spore Initiative is a cultural and educational center opened in 2022, specializing in biocultural diversity, multilingualism, and diaspora programs — the ideal location for a family festival that connects languages, cultures, and generations. U-Bahn line U8 Boddinstraße or Hermannplatz, then a few minutes' walk.
The festival will run from 2026 from 12 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The program includes: traditional Kurdish songs performed by Yekmal children from the Tum-Bak-Çap project; performances by a fathers' dance workshop; textile crafting workshops by a women's group; interactive games offered by family centers; concerts, discussion rounds, performances, a bazaar, and Kurdish cuisine. The highlight is traditionally the communal Govend, the Kurdish circle dance, which draws all participants onto the dance floor. The festival is conceived as a community format — distinct from the large institutional Nowruz at the Humboldt Forum on March 21st.
On March 28, 2026, Yekmal e.V. invites you to the annual Newroz Children's and Family Festival at the Spore Initiative in Berlin's Neukölln district. For over ten and a half hours, from 12 PM to 10:30 PM, a packed program of songs, dance, workshops, concerts, and discussions will unfold — organized by Yekmal e.V. together with Rojavida e.V. and the AfgActivistCollective. One of the most important community diaspora events for Berlin's Kurdish, Persian, and Afghan communities.
The 2026 program has been published by the organizer. Key program points:
