Grand district festival of Hamburg's south with open-air concert, hands-on activities, and regional cuisine
Once a year, always on a Sunday in September, Neugraben's market square becomes the central stage for the district. Business people clear out their stalls, clubs set up tables, church communities open their doors, HNT active members demonstrate sports, local bands take over the stage, and the air between the food stalls smells of bratwurst, potato pancakes, and North German specialties. Over 5,000 visitors typically attend throughout the day.
The concept is clear: the district presents itself to its own audience. Süderelbe-Aktiv e.V. – the central economic and cultural initiative of Hamburg's south – curates the selection of participating exhibitors. The Michaelis-Gemeinde Neugraben brings its community offerings into the public space, the HNT (Hausbruch-Neugrabener Turnerschaft) showcases its sports departments, and dozens of smaller clubs, from the local history society to the nature conservation union, introduce themselves.
A main stage on the market square hosts the musical program. Local bands from the Süderelbe region, choirs from the church community, and dance groups from sports clubs alternate in the morning and afternoon. In the late afternoon or early evening, a larger open-air concert follows – usually a regionally known cover band or a singer-songwriter act that transitions into the festive evening.
The festival is explicitly designed to be family-friendly. Hands-on activities between the stalls range from face painting and craft stations to sports demonstrations and movement activities offered by the HNT. Bouncy castles, carousels, and small fairground attractions complement the program. This makes the festival attractive for families with young children and only competes to a limited extent with the somewhat more elegant Hamburger DOM on Heiligengeistfeld.
Neugraben-Fischbek (around 28,000 inhabitants) is one of the largest districts in Harburg and is located on the southern outskirts of Hamburg, with connections to the Altes Land in the west and the Lüneburger Heide in the south. The market square is the urban center of the district, with an Edeka supermarket, a savings bank, small shops, and the Michaelis Church. The "Neugraben erleben" district festival has been the most important local gathering in the southern part of Hamburg for years – comparable to the Tibargfest in Niendorf or the district festival in Bergedorf.
The 2026 edition continues the established format: a full Sunday on Neugraben's market square, organized by three local umbrella organizations that together form the social and cultural backbone of the district. Süderelbe-Aktiv handles program coordination and business outreach, the Michaelis-Gemeinde contributes spiritual and neighborhood components, and the HNT provides sports and movement activities.
The program design for 2026 is expected to follow previous years: morning with the opening of club stalls and initial stage performances by children's and school ensembles, midday and afternoon with the main program, and late afternoon with the open-air concert and festive conclusion in the evening.
