About Musikwoche Benediktbeuern

The Musikwoche Benediktbeuern is a traditional summer masterclass for string players, guitarists, and chamber musicians at Benediktbeuern Monastery, at the gateway to the Bavarian Prealps. For a week, students and ambitious amateurs from German-speaking countries gather to expand their repertoire through intensive individual lessons and chamber music sessions. Three public concerts frame the week: the opening concert by the faculty in the monastery's Baroque Hall, and two participant concerts where the rehearsed solo and chamber music pieces are presented to the public. The format combines high-quality concerts with the special character of a spiritual place — Benediktbeuern, founded in 739/740, is one of the oldest monastery complexes in Southern Germany.

The 2026 Musikwoche Benediktbeuern will take place from August 23 to 28 at the Benediktbeuern Monastery. The week of masterclasses is framed by three public concerts: the faculty opening and benefit concert on August 23 at 7:30 PM in the Baroque Hall, and the participant concerts on August 27 (Baroque Hall) and August 28 (Don Bosco Room), both at 7:30 PM. Active participation for the 2026 course is already fully booked.

The three 2026 concert dates are confirmed on the official concert page musikwoche-benediktbeuern.de. Registration for active course participation is closed for 2026; the next Musikwoche with available spots will be in 2027. The concerts themselves are open to the public.

The faculty opening and benefit concert on August 23 in the Baroque Hall is traditionally the musical highlight of the week; admission is by donation to support the monastery. The two participant concerts showcase the pieces developed during the week—a voluntary format with free admission.

Summer Academy for Strings and Guitarists

The Musikwoche Benediktbeuern is primarily a masterclass for guitar, violin, cello, and chamber music. For one week in August, instructors from the German-speaking concert scene guide participating students and ambitious amateurs through individual lessons and chamber music sessions. Registration for active participation in the 2026 edition is already closed — the courses are sold out.

Three Public Concerts

Even if you are not a performer, you can still enjoy the Musikwoche: three public concerts form the musical framework of the event. The opening and benefit concert on August 23rd introduces the instructors in the magnificent Baroque Hall of the monastery, which, with its wall and ceiling frescoes, is considered one of the most beautiful concert halls in Upper Bavaria; admission is by donation to support the monastery. Two student concerts on August 27th and 28th give the students the opportunity to perform the solo pieces and chamber works they have been developing — admission is free for these.

Benediktbeuern Monastery

Benediktbeuern Monastery is one of the oldest monastic foundations in Bavaria. Founded as early as 739/740, it is now a residence of the Salesians of Don Bosco. The Baroque monastery complex, featuring a church, convent buildings, a library, and facilities for conferences and concerts, is located right at the gateway to the Loisach-Kochelsee-Moore nature reserve at the foot of the Benediktenwand. The Carmina Burana, the most famous medieval manuscript of songs in the German-speaking world, originated from this monastery library.

Benediktbeuern and the Alpine Foothills

Benediktbeuern is a municipality with around 3,700 inhabitants in the district of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, in the administrative region of Upper Bavaria, state of Bavaria. Its location on the southern edge of the Upper Bavarian foothills — at the foot of the Benediktenwand (1,801 m) — makes the town a popular destination for hikers and day-trippers from Munich (approx. 60 km to the north). The Musikwoche adds a high-level cultural component to the local tourism offerings.
