About Musikwoche Benediktbeuern

The Musikwoche Benediktbeuern is a traditional summer masterclass for string players, guitarists, and chamber musicians at Benediktbeuern Monastery, at the gateway to the Bavarian Prealps. For a week, students and ambitious amateurs from German-speaking countries gather to expand their repertoire through intensive individual lessons and chamber music sessions. Three public concerts frame the week: the opening concert by the faculty in the monastery's Baroque Hall, and two participant concerts where the rehearsed solo and chamber music pieces are presented to the public. The format combines high-quality concerts with the special character of a spiritual place — Benediktbeuern, founded in 739/740, is one of the oldest monastery complexes in Southern Germany.

Summer Academy for String Players and Guitarists

The Musikwoche Benediktbeuern is primarily a masterclass for guitar, violin, cello, and chamber music. For one week in August, faculty members from the German-speaking concert scene teach participating students and ambitious amateurs in individual lessons and chamber music sessions. For the 2026 edition, registration for active participation is already closed — the courses are sold out.

Three Public Concerts

Even those who don't play themselves can participate in the Musikwoche: Three public concerts form the musical framework. The Opening Concert on August 23rd features the faculty — in the magnificent Baroque Hall of the monastery, which, with its wall and ceiling paintings, is one of the most beautiful concert halls in Upper Bavaria. Two Participant Concerts on August 27th and 28th give students the opportunity to perform their rehearsed solo pieces and chamber music works.

Benediktbeuern Monastery

Benediktbeuern Monastery is one of the oldest monastic foundations in Bavaria. Founded as early as 739/740, it is now a branch of the Salesians of Don Bosco. The Baroque monastery complex with its church, convent buildings, library, and rooms for conferences and concerts is located directly at the gateway to the Loisach-Kochelsee-Moore nature reserve and at the foot of the Benediktenwand. The Carmina Burana, the most famous medieval song manuscript from the German-speaking world, originates from this monastery library.

Benediktbeuern and the Bavarian Prealps

Benediktbeuern is a municipality with around 3,700 inhabitants in the district of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, Upper Bavaria administrative region, Bavaria state. Its location on the southern edge of the Upper Bavarian foreland — at the foot of the Benediktenwand (1,801 m) — makes it a popular destination for hikers and day-trippers from Munich (approx. 60 km north). The Musikwoche adds a high-quality cultural component to the tourist offerings.

Musikwoche Benediktbeuern — edition 2026

Musikwoche Benediktbeuern 2026 runs from August 23 to 28 at Benediktbeuern Monastery. Three public concerts frame the masterclass week: the faculty opening concert on August 23 at 7:30 PM in the Baroque Hall, and participant concerts on August 27 (Baroque Hall) and August 28 (Don Bosco Room), both at 7:30 PM. Active participation in the 2026 course is already fully booked.

The three concert dates for 2026 are confirmed via the official concert page musikwoche-benediktbeuern.de. Registrations for active course participation are closed for 2026 — the next Musikwoche with available course slots is the 2027 edition (August 21–28, 2027). The concerts themselves are freely bookable.

The faculty's opening concert on August 23 in the Baroque Hall is traditionally the musical highlight of the week. The two participant concerts present the works rehearsed during the course week — a format that takes place on a voluntary basis.
