Family festival in one of Europe's best-preserved Renaissance fortresses
The Zitadelle Spandau, dating from the 16th century, is one of Europe's best-preserved Renaissance fortresses. Four bastions, a 145m high Julius Tower from the Middle Ages, walls made from stone quarried around Rüdersdorf — the massive complex at the confluence of the Havel and Spree rivers today looks more like a backdrop from "Game of Thrones" than a Berlin museum site. Exactly this backdrop becomes a playground for children once a year.
Program 2026 (May 10, 12 PM–5 PM): creative workshops, hands-on stations, sword fighting practice, guided tours through the bastions, stage program with dance performance, shadow theatre, magic show, and a musical journey through pop styles. All free. Food and drinks are sold on-site, picnics are welcome.
Spandau, Berlin's western district, was its own city until 1920 — and never fully declared itself incorporated ("we are not Berlin, we are Spandau"). The Citadel, founded in 1559 as Albrecht Achilles' fortress, lies at the confluence of the Havel and Spree rivers on the western edge of Berlin. The Museumskinderfest is one of the few major events organized by the Spandau District Office together with Berlin cultural institutions — a deliberate statement for cultural visibility beyond the city center.
On Sunday, May 10, 2026, from 12 PM to 5 PM, the Zitadelle Spandau will transform into a family playground with a historic Renaissance backdrop for the Museumskinderfest. Creative workshops, hands-on stations, sword fighting exercises, and bastion tours are part of the program. On stage, a children's dance group (12:30 PM), shadow theatre (for ages 3+), a musical journey through pop styles, and a magic show (3:15 PM) will perform. Free admission for all activities. Food and drinks are sold on-site, picnics are welcome.
The complete program for the Museumskinderfest 2026 at the Zitadelle Spandau, based on the organizer's announcement (zitadelle-berlin.de):
According to Cultural Councillor Dr. Carola Brückner: "The festival enables children from all social classes to access free cultural education." Despite budget constraints in Berlin, the Museumskinderfest is organized annually as a funding program by the Spandau District Office.
Admission to the Museumskinderfest and all workshops are free. Food and drinks are paid for individually on-site. Picnics welcome. Travel by U7 (Zitadelle) directly to the entrance.
Take the U-Bahn line U7 to U Zitadelle (1 min walk) or the tram to Spandau Bf, then walk for 15 minutes. By car, take Heerstraße / A100, parking is available in front of the Citadel (for a fee).
Admission to the Museumskinderfest is free, all workshops and program items are also free. Food and drinks are sold on-site, picnics are welcome.
Sunday 12:00 PM–5:00 PM.
