Europe's largest crime biennale, 12th edition from September 19 to November 14, 2026 — Motto 'Mörderdämmerung'
'Mord am Hellweg' has been considered Europe's largest crime festival since its inception in 2002. The biennale takes place every two years in the Hellweg region — a cultural landscape in North Rhine-Westphalia stretching along the historic Hellweg trade route from Duisburg via Dortmund, Hamm, Soest, Werl to Paderborn. The organizer is the Westfälisches Literaturbüro in Unna in cooperation with municipalities in the region. Bergkamen, a town in the Unna district (Arnsberg administrative district), is one of the central venues with its own festival events in the city library and the cultural center.
The 2026 festival season spans almost two months: opening on September 19, 2026, and closing on November 14, 2026. During this time, around 100 events with over 200 authors will be spread across the municipalities of the Hellweg region — Bergkamen, Dortmund, Hamm, Lünen, Soest, Werl, Werne, Paderborn, and others. The program ranges from cozy crime (lighthearted crime with a wink) to hard-boiled thrillers, from historical crime to science fiction crime.
The motto for the 2026 biennale is 'Mörderdämmerung' — a literary play on Wagner's 'Götterdämmerung'. The organizers are alluding to the dark, ambivalent tones of contemporary crime fiction: anti-heroes, moral gray areas, diagnoses of societal decay, which are dealt with particularly unflinchingly in the crime genre. The readings, discussions, and workshops will embrace the motto — many events will address transitions, upheavals, and threat scenarios.
Among the top acts for 2026 is the British bestselling thriller author Chris Carter (not to be confused with the X-Files creator) — known for his Robert Hunter series of hard-hitting, psychologically gripping thrillers. The Frankfurt-based thriller author Chris Dominik is also involved; he researched in Bergkamen in 2025 specifically for a short story for the festival anthology, accompanied by cultural representatives of the city. Further names will be announced by the organizer in the program booklet releases in July 2026.
Bergkamen, a former mining town in the northeastern Ruhr area with around 49,000 inhabitants, has been part of the festival since its beginning in 2002. The Bergkamen City Library is the venue for several readings, as are the Kulturzentrum studio theater and the Sport-Centrum. Bergkamen benefits from the festival not only culturally but also economically in terms of tourism — crime fans from all over Germany travel for individual readings.
Advance ticket sales begin in spring 2026 — the program booklet will be published in July 2026, once all author confirmations and venues are finalized. Individual events typically cost €10-15 (readings), workshops €25-40. Festival passes for multiple dates are also available. Those wishing to attend multiple events in different cities can organize a festival shuttle via the Hellweg railway network.
The twelfth edition of 'Mord am Hellweg' marks a quarter-century plus three years since its founding in 2002 — Bergkamen celebrates with its own festival events as one of the central venues. Nearly 100 readings, discussions, workshops, and performances will be spread across approximately 25 towns in the Hellweg region.
The motto 'Mörderdämmerung' — a literary play on Wagner — refers to the ambivalent, dark tones of contemporary crime fiction: anti-heroes, gray areas, societal diagnoses. The readings, discussions, and workshops will thematically embrace the motto. The Westfälisches Literaturbüro Unna is responsible for the program in collaboration with the participating municipalities.
