A medieval town in the heart of the Oberpfalz
When the Teublitz town park opens its gates for the Horto Historico on an August weekend, time seems to jump back centuries. The »Platz der Freiheit« becomes a bustling medieval market street where nobles, servants, maids, traveling merchants, and seasoned knights go about their business. For over a decade, the festival has been a fixture in the Upper Palatinate event calendar, attracting thousands of visitors from the Schwandorf district and all of Bavaria each year.
The Great Knight's Battle for Tiubelitz
The highlight of the festival is the »Great Knight's Battle for Tiubelitz«, performed on both weekend days on the festival grounds. Heavy armor clangs, swords flash, and spectators experience firsthand how two armies settle their disputes with courage and skill. In addition, the medieval puppet theater provides entertaining hours, and after dark, fire artists enchant the audience with sparkling choreographies.
Crafts, Camp Life, and Music
What particularly distinguishes the Horto Historico is the variety of authentic camp groups. Cooking is done over open fires, blacksmiths swing their hammers, women practice needle binding, and children watch chain braiding, leatherworking, and chainmail construction. The musicians provide the fitting soundscape with hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes, jingle drums, and shawms: bands like Grex Confusus, Bernd von Ammenberg, Terzium Laszivus, or Terry the Bard have performed at the festival in recent years.
Tiubelitz – the medieval root of the town
The name »Horto Historico Tiubelitz« refers to the medieval spelling of the town's name. Teublitz was first mentioned in documents in the late Middle Ages; the festival commemorates this history, deeply rooted in the Oberpfalz, and makes it tangible over a long weekend. For the town between the Naab valley and Regenstauf, it is the most important summer event and a cultural self-runner.
Cuisine from the Dark Ages
The festival grounds are filled with the aroma of grilled suckling pig, stick bread, hearty lard bread, and sweet almonds. Dark beer from the Jacob brewery from nearby Bodenwöhr flows into clay mugs. For those who prefer non-alcoholic options, there's mead, elderflower lemonade, or warm apple juice with spices – just as it should be for a medieval market festival.
