Free cultural night in the historic old town of the Swabian district capital
The Mindelheimer Altstadtnacht is one of Unterallgäu's most charming cultural events. On a single Friday evening in September, the historic old town of the district capital transforms into a walkable venue: numerous performance points emerge throughout the evening between Marienplatz, Maximilianstraße, Apothekergässchen, and the narrow courtyards. Musicians, cabaret artists, theater ensembles, and dance groups perform in restaurants, shops, courtyards, and public squares.
Mindelheim is the district capital of the Unterallgäu district in the Bavarian administrative region of Swabia, with around 16,000 inhabitants. The old town is largely a listed monument: the medieval town wall is preserved in large parts, as is the striking Mindelheim Maximilian Museum, the parish church of St. Stephan, and the Renaissance town hall. The Maximilianstraße, with its brightly plastered burgher houses, is one of Swabia's most beautiful streets and provides the setting for the Altstadtnacht.
The concept of the Mindelheimer Altstadtnacht is based on close cooperation between the city of Mindelheim, local retailers, restaurateurs, and cultural associations:
For the 2026 Altstadtnacht, the city of Mindelheim issued a public call for artists to submit creative ideas in advance. This ensures that the program is new each year — no edition is the same as the previous one, attracting both regular visitors and first-timers alike.
Unlike the major cultural nights in metropolises (e.g., the Long Night of Museums in Munich), the Mindelheimer Altstadtnacht sees itself as a family-friendly, intimate format. The manageable radius of the old town allows for relaxed strolling without long distances; parents with children, seniors, and young adults meet in the same squares. The free admission aligns with the city's philosophy of making culture easily accessible.
The 2026 edition of the Mindelheimer Altstadtnacht runs on Friday, September 18, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM. The venue is the entire historic old town between Marienplatz, MaximilianstraĂźe, and the surrounding alleys.
As every year, the city of Mindelheim relies on a decentralized concept: numerous small performance points in restaurants, shops, courtyards, and public squares featuring local and regional artists. The complete program will be published in the summer of 2026 on the city's tourism website. The city had previously launched a call for artists to submit creative ideas for 2026 — the program is developed through the joint participation of the Mindelheim scene.
Free admission to all program points; individual food and drinks are paid for at the local restaurants.
The exact program with times and venues will be published a few weeks before the event on mindelheim.de and in a flyer from the Tourist Information Office.
