Franconian wines and Franconian cuisine at Engelplatz
Miltenberg is recognized as a Culinary Destination Bavaria – an award for places with a special culinary identity. The Wine Autumn is the highlight of the town's culinary calendar. On Engelplatz, one of the most beautiful squares on the Bavarian Lower Main with half-timbered houses and a historic fountain, vintners from Churfranken – the wine region between Spessart, Odenwald, and Main – will be serving their finest wines.
On the menus of the participating vintners are the typical Franconian wine varieties: Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, Kerner, as well as red wines like Spätburgunder, Domina, and Schwarzriesling. Many vintners come from the surrounding wine villages – Bürgstadt, Klingenberg, Großwallstadt, Erlenbach am Main – and bring wines directly from their estates. Accompanying this is classic Franconian cuisine: Sauerbraten, Rostbratwurst, Fränkische Brotzeitplatte (Franconian snack platter), Zwiebelkuchen (onion tart) with Federweißer (young wine), and more.
The Wine Autumn traditionally takes place over two weekends, with a break in between. It is open from midday until late evening, allowing families to find their favorite time during the day and connoisseurs in the evening. On Sundays, there is often Sunday shopping in Miltenberg's old town, with the outlet center and local shops adding to the festival atmosphere. Live music on a small stage complements the program.
Miltenberg is one of Germany's most beautiful medieval towns. The old town with its market square, Miltenberg Castle on the Greinberg, and the historic Main promenade attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists every year. Engelplatz, slightly off the market square, offers a quiet alternative – ideal for a leisurely wine festival. Churfranken – the wine-growing area between Aschaffenburg, Wertheim, and Bürgstadt – is one of Bavaria's northernmost wine regions and is protected as a nature park region.
In 2026, the town of Miltenberg once again invites you to the Wine Autumn on Engelplatz — the typical division into two weekends remains. From Friday, September 25, to Sunday, September 27, 2026, Churfranken vintners will be serving Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, Spätburgunder, and Domina. After a short break, the second festival weekend follows from Thursday, October 1, to Tuesday, October 6. Open daily from midday until late evening, with slightly shorter hours on the last day. Franconian cuisine, from Sauerbraten to Zwiebelkuchen with Federweißer, complements the wine selection. One of the two Sundays typically features Sunday shopping — with open shops in the old town and the Miltenberg Outlet Center.
