A Tradition Centuries Old
The Michaelismesse is one of the most traditional Volksfeste in Bavaria. Its origins date back to 1367, when Emperor Charles IV granted the town of Miltenberg a yearly fair. In 1425, the festival was moved to Michaelmas (September 29th), from which its name is derived; the fair has been celebrated in its current Volksfest form since 1928. Miltenberg is located in the district of the same name in the Bavarian Untermain region, nestled between the Spessart and Odenwald hills on the Main River.
Festival Tent, Market, and Amusement Park
For ten days, the Michaelismesse offers a diverse program: a large festival tent with a beer garden, the traditional market square, the festive parade, an extensive amusement park with rides, as well as numerous showmen and exhibitions. The festival tent is operated by the Widmann family of hosts, who have been providing delicious food, a great atmosphere, and hospitality for three generations. The tent's program ranges from brass band music to modern entertainment and regional culinary specialties.
Family Day and Finale Fireworks
On Family Day (Thursday), reduced prices apply to rides – ideal for a visit with children. The grand finale is the spectacular fireworks display from the Mildenburg castle, which bathes the old town in colorful light on the last Sunday evening around 9 PM. Using "Greenline" pyrotechnics (environmentally friendly, noise-reduced, over 15,000 effects), the spectacle combines tradition and modern responsibility.
A Festival for the Entire Region
With thousands of visitors from all over the Untermain region, the Michaelismesse is a social highlight of the year. The Sunday with open shops at the end of the fair also draws crowds to the historic old town.
