World Music Festival in Nuremberg's Old Town — 50th Anniversary Edition 2026 with Hans Sachs connection
The Bardentreffen is Nuremberg's oldest and largest open-air festival and one of the most important World Music events in German-speaking countries. Founded in 1976 in memory of the Nuremberg Meistersinger Hans Sachs (1494–1576), the festival has since brought together Liedermacher, world musicians, folk bands, and internationally oriented pop acts in Nuremberg's Old Town. In 2026, it celebrates its 50th anniversary — a special edition that also commemorates the 450th anniversary of Hans Sachs' death.
One of the distinctive features of the Bardentreffen is its free access. All 8 stages in the Old Town and all street concerts are accessible without an entrance fee. This programmatically sets the festival apart from commercial pop festivals. At the same time, it attracts one of the largest festival audiences in Southern Germany every year — estimates range up to 200,000 visitors over the four festival days.
The Bardentreffen utilizes the entire width of Nuremberg's Old Town as an open-air stage. The 8 main stages are spread across central squares and streets:
The main program is complemented by street musicians who can apply for the 17 time slots on the Karolinenstraße stage (acoustic, unamplified, max. 60 min per slot — application deadline 2026: May 18).
The 2026 anniversary edition places a special focus on Thursday, July 30: a special program on the Hauptmarkt that bridges the gap between Hans Sachs (Meistersinger, 16th-century Liedermacher), Liedkultur (song culture), and international global pop. From Thursday to Sunday — for the first time one day earlier than usual — international Liedermacher and lyrical artists will be at the center, with a program ranging from global pop and folk to musical cabaret. Communal singing and participatory formats will receive special emphasis.
The main sponsor is Sparda-Bank; media partner is BR2. The organizer is the Kultur Project Office of the City of Nuremberg.
The 50th edition of the Bardentreffen marks a historic double anniversary: 50 years of World Music Festival in Nuremberg AND 450 years since the death of the Meistersinger Hans Sachs, in whose memory the festival was founded in 1976.
For this occasion, the festival will start one day earlier than usual in 2026: on Thursday, July 30, 2026, a special program will kick off at the Hauptmarkt, bridging the connection between Hans Sachs as a historical Liedermacher, traditional song culture, and international global pop.
Over four festival days (Thursday to Sunday), around 400 artists will perform on 8 stages in Nuremberg's Old Town — from internationally renowned acts to newcomers in the World Music, Folk, and Liedermacher genres. The program will be complemented by numerous street musicians on Karolinenstraße, whose application deadline for 2026 was May 18.
The full program with approx. 100 official program points will be published at the end of June 2026 on bardentreffen.nuernberg.de.
Hauptmarkt, Sebalder Platz, Insel Schütt, Trödelmarkt, St. Katharina, Egidienplatz, Karolinenstraße (Acoustic Stage) and others — all in the historic Old Town.
