Atmospheric start to the autumn market season on the Lower Rhine

As the days get shorter in early November and the lights come on, the Volksfest of the season begins in Vluyn: The Vluyner Martinsmarkt has traditionally marked the start of the Advent season in the western Wesel district for years. Around the historic Vluyner Dorfkirche and the adjacent Schulplatz, exhibitors, clubs, and caterers set up their stalls — framed by fairy lights, warm bonfires, and the scent of mulled wine and roasted almonds.

• Sunday, November 8, 2026: 11:00 AM – 7:00 PM
• Open shopping Sunday in Vluyn from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM

What you'll find at the Vluyner Martinsmarkt

The Martinsmarkt follows the tradition of St. Martin's Day and combines classic crafts with modern design pieces:

• Arts and Crafts: Wood, ceramics, jewelry, textiles, and home accessories from regional production.
• Culinary Delights: Reibekuchen (potato pancakes), wild boar sausage, crêpes, Flammkuchen (savory tart), soups, roasted almonds, Schmalzgebäck (lard pastries), and of course, mulled wine and punch.
• Light Installations: The village church and its surrounding squares are warmly illuminated — a special atmosphere for family photos.
• Music and Activities: Choirs, small stage acts, and club stalls, often with children's programs.

Vluyn and Neukirchen — the Lower Rhine in November

Neukirchen-Vluyn is located in the Wesel district in North Rhine-Westphalia, on the western Lower Rhine between Moers, Kamp-Lintfort, and Kempen. The former mining area has developed into a quiet, green residential town — and the Martinsmarkt is one of the few major events of the year that attracts locals as well as day-trippers from Duisburg, Krefeld, and the right bank of the Rhine. Vluyn (the southern district) offers a particularly picturesque setting for an evening stroll with its church square and cobbled village street.

Getting There

By car via the A40 (exit Moers-West) or the A57 (exit Krefeld-Oppum). Parking is available in the vicinity of the Schulplatz; during particularly busy hours, larger parking lots on Niederrheinallee are recommended. By public transport: NIAG bus lines, stop "Vluyn Kirche".
