Spooky Walpurgis City Tour through Osterode's historical murder cases – Centered around Greta Mankopf
The Walpurgis City Tour Osterode am Harz offers an unusual accent in the southern Harz Walpurgis calendar. While Bad Sachsa, Bad Lauterberg, Bad Grund, and Walkenried celebrate on April 30th with theater, live music, fire shows, and disco Walpurgis parties, Osterode offers a cultural-historical city tour that delves into the dark chapters of the city's history.
At the heart of the tour is the story of the mysterious Greta Mankopf, whose fate shapes Osterode's city chronicle. In addition, other historical murder cases, witch trials, and unsolved crimes in Osterode's history are covered. The topics are prepared using historically sound sources and placed in the context of their respective eras.
Unlike purely historical tours, the Walpurgis City Tour incorporates theatrical staging: actors embody historical figures at significant locations, atmospheric lighting, and musical accompaniment enhance the Walpurgis character. The tour typically lasts around 90 to 120 minutes.
The meeting point is usually the Market Square (Marktplatz) or the Kornmarkt in Osterode's old town. The route covers several historical sites – the Town Hall, Market Church, former courthouse, old residential buildings – and concludes with a convivial gathering in an Osterode restaurant.
The 2026 edition continues the tradition of the theatrically staged cultural-historical guided tour. The exact meeting point, precise time, and route will be announced by VTM Osterode in good time on the event page.
