One of Germany's three major Rose Monday parades: 9 km, over 9,000 participants, and around 600,000 spectators in the streets of Mainz city center.
With over 9,260 participants, 126 float designs, 2,000 musicians, 40 horses, and around 5,200 participants in walking groups, the Mainz Rose Monday parade is among the three largest carnival parades in Germany. The parade route is nine kilometers long, and the parade itself often takes several hours to pass through the city center. With around 600,000 spectators lining the route, the Rose Monday parade is one of the largest open-air events in Germany.
The start is traditionally at 11:11 AM at the corner of Josefs- und Boppstraße. The parade moves through Mainz's Neustadt and city center, passing the city's main squares – Schillerplatz, Gutenbergplatz, Marktplatz – and dissolves around 4:30 PM in the Münsterplatz area. Leading groups such as the Mainz Guards, the parade leadership, the Prince's Guard, the Ranzengarde, the Kleppergarde, the Princess Guard, and the Mombacher Bohnebeitel open the parade; followed by a colorful mix of float designs, walking groups, music bands, and guards from Mainz and the surrounding suburbs, as well as guest clubs from the Rhineland and the Palatinate.
A special feature of the Mainz Rose Monday parade is its strong political and satirical tradition in the float designs. Unlike the more carnival-esque and festive Cologne parade, Mainz float designers tackle current political, social, and international issues with humor and biting wit. Local, national, and world events are commented on the floats with wit, mockery, and sometimes sharp criticism – a direct continuation of the "Meenzer Schwellköpp" tradition and the political-literary carnival of the 19th century.
The motto for the 2026 campaign, "Die Hofsänger im Gold'nen Mainz – seit 100 Jahr'n die Nummer 1", honors the 100th anniversary of the Mainzer Hofsänger, one of Germany's oldest and best-known carnival singing groups. The anniversary not only shapes the Rose Monday parade but also the entire campaign with numerous special sessions, songs, and events.
The Mainz battle cry is "Helau". Tons of candies, chocolates, plush toys, small toys, and especially Strüßjer – small bouquets of flowers – are thrown into the audience from the floats and by the walking groups. The latter are a Mainz specialty and are often specifically distributed to women, children, and parade enthusiasts. Those who catch a bouquet traditionally return the greeting with a "Helau".
The parade starts, as is traditional, at the corner of Josefs- und Boppstraße in Mainz's Neustadt and proceeds via Bauhofstraße, Kaiserstraße, Hindenburgstraße, Schillerplatz, Ludwigsstraße, and Markt until its dissolution at Münsterplatz around 4:30 PM. Leading groups traditionally include the parade leadership, the Prince's Guard, the Kleppergarde, the Princess Guard, and the historic Mainz Guards; followed by floats with current political satire, music bands, marching bands, and walking groups from Mainz, its suburbs, and friendly clubs from the Rhineland and the Palatinate.
