Traditional village harvest festival in Neukirchen with club parade and harvest crown
On the Lower Rhine, in the Wesel district, lies the town of Neukirchen-Vluyn — a town of 27,000 inhabitants at the transition from the Ruhr area to the Lower Rhine lowlands. In the Neukirchen district, the Erntedankfest im Dorf (village harvest festival) has been celebrated for years on the third weekend of September — a rural, traditional festival that combines harvest thanksgiving, a neighborhood festival, and a farmers' market into a unique format.
The 2026 edition takes place on Saturday, September 19, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The venue is Hochstraße and the area around the Dorfkirche (village church) in Neukirchen. The program:
Erntedankfest is one of the oldest festivals in Christian-agrarian tradition in Germany. It marks the end of the harvest year and expresses thanks to God (Christian) and nature (secular) for the harvest. In Neukirchen, this custom is maintained in a contemporary format: Christian tradition (Ökumenisches Forum), civic engagement (Heimat- und Verkehrsverein, Lokale Agenda 21), and municipal participation (City of Neukirchen-Vluyn).
The diversity of organizers shows that the festival is more than just a market weekend:
In addition, dozens of volunteers from Neukirchen's clubs organize and support the festival.
Neukirchen is the historic district of the twin municipality Neukirchen-Vluyn (merged in 1928). With the village church, Hochstraße as the central axis, and the half-timbered houses, the atmosphere of a Lower Rhine farming village has been preserved — even though structural change and the proximity to the Ruhr area have left their mark. The Erntedankfest celebrates this village soul.
The Niederrhein (Lower Rhine) is the flat, fertile lowland between the Ruhr area, the Dutch border, and the Münsterland. Agriculture shapes the region — asparagus, grain, dairy farming. The Erntedankfest in Neukirchen combines this agricultural identity with village club life, making it an authentic Lower Rhine experience.
The 2026 edition continues the tradition established over many years. The organizers are the City of Neukirchen-Vluyn, Lokale Agenda 21, Ökumenisches Forum, and Heimat- und Verkehrsverein Neukirchen e.V., supported by dozens of volunteers from Neukirchen's clubs.
