A Summer Festival in the Shadow of the Castle

The Marktfest Elfershausen is one of the traditional summer events in the Lower Franconian district of Bad Kissingen. The venue is the picturesque castle courtyard in the center of the town, which transforms into a festival ground with a marquee, market stalls, and a music stage on an August weekend. Nestled between Marktstraße and August-Ullrich-Straße, the area provides an atmospheric backdrop for a festival that attracts the village community and visitors from the surrounding Saale villages alike.

Beer Tapping, Vintage Cars, and Market Life

The program traditionally begins on Saturday evening with the ceremonial beer tapping by the mayor. Afterwards, the local clubs invite guests to enjoy food and drinks in the marquee, while the courtyard fills with brass music and a festive atmosphere. A special feature is the vintage tractor rides, which, accompanied by expert commentary on agricultural machinery, tour the village and along the Saale river. On Sunday, the market opens its stalls: crafts, regional products, a flea market, and a varied children's program with games, a bouncy castle, and hands-on activities ensure a colorful hustle and bustle around the castle courtyard.

Elfershausen is located in the valley of the Fränkische Saale, nestled between the Rhön and Hassbergen mountains in the state of Bavaria. The community belongs to the Franconia Saalestück tourism region and maintains a vibrant tradition of wine, agriculture, and club life. The Marktfest is an expression of this rootedness: every club – from the fire department and the music band to the shooting club – takes on a festival task, and the proceeds flow back into the community life of the market town of Elfershausen.

Culinary delights include typical Franconian cuisine: sausages from the charcoal grill, Schäuferla (pork shoulder), homemade cakes on Sunday afternoon, and beer from regional breweries. Those who prefer wine will also find vintages from the nearby Saale vineyards. The mix of market atmosphere, club life, and festive character makes the Marktfest a typical Lower Franconian summer experience – familiar, unpretentious, and with great warmth.

A Date for the Whole Family

With free admission, a free children's program, and its central location in the castle courtyard, the Marktfest is particularly suitable for a weekend getaway. Hikers and cyclists on the Saaleradweg (Saale Cycle Path) often stop here. The event is also a recurring meeting point in summer for families from Hammelburg, Bad Kissingen, and the wider region.
