Spring festival with Sunday opening hours in the Eder town
Frankenberg (Eder) is a small but culturally and historically interesting half-timbered town in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district, located about 30 km west of Bad Wildungen and near the Edersee lake. The medieval old town with its famous Zehntscheunen-Areal (tithe barn area) and the town hall on the upper market is one of the most beautiful half-timbered ensembles in North Hesse. The annual Maistadtfest marks the start of spring for retail and public life in the town.
The venue is the pedestrian zone of Frankenberg, mainly Neustädter Straße and the adjoining alleys around the market square. Catering stands, market stalls, and sales stands from Frankenberg's shops are spread along the festival mile. The combination of a classic town festival and Sunday opening hours is characteristic: shops are open on Sunday afternoons, using the festival as a platform to present spring collections and offers.
The festival runs on Saturday, May 2nd, 2026, from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM (regular market and festival day) and on Sunday, May 3rd, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM (Sunday opening). Shops in Frankenberg's city center are open on Sunday afternoons as part of the Hessian Sunday opening regulations. Live music, children's programs, and culinary stands complement the market and shopping offerings.
The organizer is the Kaufmännisnischer Verein Frankenberg e.V. (KVF), the interest group for Frankenberg retailers. The association organizes several events throughout the year – the Maistadtfest in May is the largest and most important event, shaping the spring season.
