About Maistadtfest Frankenberg

The Maistadtfest in Frankenberg (Eder) is the traditional spring festival in the North Hessian half-timbered town. On May 2nd and 3rd, 2026, the pedestrian zone of the Eder town will be transformed into a two-day festival mile with a Sunday opening, from Saturday 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM and Sunday 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Organized by the Kaufmännischer Verein Frankenberg. In the shadow of Frankenberg's historic half-timbered scenery, the Eder town celebrates the start of spring – combined with the first Sunday opening of the season.

Start of Spring in Frankenberg

Frankenberg (Eder) is a small but culturally and historically interesting half-timbered town in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district, located about 30 km west of Bad Wildungen and near the Edersee lake. The medieval old town with its famous Zehntscheunen-Areal (tithe barn area) and the town hall on the upper market is one of the most beautiful half-timbered ensembles in North Hesse. The annual Maistadtfest marks the start of spring for retail and public life in the town.

Festival Mile in the Pedestrian Zone

The venue is the pedestrian zone of Frankenberg, mainly Neustädter Straße and the adjoining alleys around the market square. Catering stands, market stalls, and sales stands from Frankenberg's shops are spread along the festival mile. The combination of a classic town festival and Sunday opening hours is characteristic: shops are open on Sunday afternoons, using the festival as a platform to present spring collections and offers.

Program and Opening Hours

The festival runs on Saturday, May 2nd, 2026, from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM (regular market and festival day) and on Sunday, May 3rd, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM (Sunday opening). Shops in Frankenberg's city center are open on Sunday afternoons as part of the Hessian Sunday opening regulations. Live music, children's programs, and culinary stands complement the market and shopping offerings.

Kaufmännischer Verein as Organizer

The organizer is the Kaufmännisnischer Verein Frankenberg e.V. (KVF), the interest group for Frankenberg retailers. The association organizes several events throughout the year – the Maistadtfest in May is the largest and most important event, shaping the spring season.

Frankenberg as a Festival Backdrop

Frankenberg (Eder) is one of the most beautiful half-timbered towns in North Hesse. The medieval old town with the town hall, built in 1421, and the Liebfrauenkirche form the backdrop for the Maistadtfest. Visitors who come to the town for the first time often combine the festival with a walk through the Oberstadt and a view of the Edersee lake, which is only a 30-minute drive away.
