Traditional marksmen's festival of the Bienenbüttel Marksmen's Guild and Surroundings since 1693 with Zapfenstreich and King's Breakfast
The Bienenbüttel and Surroundings Marksmen's Guild since 1693 is one of the most traditional guilds in Northern Germany. Founded in the late 17th century as a defensive citizens' association, it has developed into an integral part of village life over the centuries. The annual marksmen's festival is its central highlight, bringing together members, friendly clubs, and the entire village population.
From 2026, the new Bienenbüttel Multi-Purpose Center with a modern shooting range will be available. This investment strengthens the Marksmen's Guild sustainably: sports shooters can train year-round under the best conditions, club life has a modern meeting point, and the marksmen's festival also benefits from the new infrastructure. The 2026 festival thus marks the premiere in the new facility.
The Großer Zapfenstreich (Grand Tattoo) is one of the most emotional moments of the festival. The fife and drum corps and marksmen formations march in the twilight, the club flags are lowered, and traditional songs are played. It is a moment of dignity and camaraderie that has been part of the marksmen's festival for generations.
The focus is on the King's Shooting, where marksmen determine the new king from among their ranks. Whoever takes the decisive shot reigns as Marksmen King for one year—with all honors and duties. The King's Breakfast on Sunday morning brings the newly proclaimed King, his Queen, and the court attendants together with the club family at one table—a festive meal celebrating unity.
Parallel to the main festival, the Children's Marksmen's Festival takes place: children and teenagers determine their own kings, there are games, carousels, candy stalls, and their own royal proclamation. Thus, the tradition is passed on to the next generation.
A festive parade with the fife and drum corps, marksmen's clubs from neighboring towns, and the royal carriage leads through the streets of Bienenbüttel. The villagers line the route. In the evenings, dance events with live bands invite guests to the festival tent—from traditional dance music to current hits, everything is included.
Bienenbüttel is located on the railway line between Lüneburg and Uelzen and is a rural idyll with its typical heath villages, brick churches, and thatched roofs. Here, the marksmen's festival is not a folklore event but lived village culture, in which many families have been involved for generations.
The event calendar of bienenbuettel.de confirms the marksmen's festival at the beginning of August. The sister club Jaegercorps of the Ebstorf Marksmen's Guild notes a date of August 2nd for Bienenbüttel. The main festival days traditionally run from Thursday to Sunday.
