Summer Sunday Concerts in the Gothic Monastery Church
The Haina Monastery was founded in 1215 as a Cistercian monastery in the Kellerwald and is now considered one of Hesse's most important early Gothic structures. The Monastery Church, with its balanced acoustics, high Gothic vaults, and simple Cistercian interior, is an ideal stage for classical music — and that's precisely what has made the Klosterkonzerte Haina a hidden gem for chamber music lovers from central and northern Hesse for generations.
The season traditionally starts on Pentecost Sunday: in 2026, the opening concert will be on May 24th, followed by a concert every Sunday at 5 PM until September 13th. The program is deliberately broad: chamber music with trumpet, organ, and guitar, first-class choirs, and a jazz trio as a summer highlight. "An attractive program for connoisseurs and enthusiasts," write the organizers — and they mean it.
The series is supported by the Protestant Parish of Hohes Lohr in the Kellerwald, with assistance from the Friends of Haina Monastery Association. The concerts have been organized by volunteers for decades; admission and program costs are kept intentionally low to allow for spontaneous Sunday visits. Tickets are available only at the concert box office, which opens at 4 PM.
Haina is located in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district, on the edge of the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park. Those planning a Sunday in the area can ideally combine attending a concert with a hike: marked trails lead through ancient beech forests around Haina, and the Edersee lake is half an hour away by car. The Monastery Museum (open daily except Mondays from 11 AM to 5 PM) is worth a visit before or after the concert.
In 2026, Haina Monastery will celebrate several anniversaries that will accompany the concert year — including 500 years of the Reformation in the region (with reference to the Homberg Synod) and a special exhibition on the Tischbein family of painters. Those with flexible travel plans can combine a Sunday concert with a special exhibition on the same day.
The season runs for about four months, with a concert every Sunday at 5 PM. The organizer is the Protestant Parish of Hohes Lohr in the Kellerwald, supported by the Friends of Haina Monastery Association. Detailed program (which soloists/choirs on which Sunday) will be announced shortly before the season starts in the local press and on the notice board at the monastery complex.
The exact programs for individual Sundays will be announced — as is traditional — shortly before each concert via the Hohes Lohr parish and the Klosterhaina website.
Tickets are available only at the concert box office, which opens at 4 PM in the Monastery Church. Prices are traditionally moderate, within the usual range for church concert series.
By car: A49 exit Borken-Hessen, then B252 towards Frankenau / Haina. Parking available around the monastery complex. By train: Frankenberg (Eder) station, then take a bus or taxi to Haina.
Available only at the concert box office, which opens from 4 PM (concert starts at 5 PM). Cash payment is recommended. It can get crowded for major artists — arriving early is worthwhile.
The Monastery Museum is open daily except Mondays from 11 AM to 5 PM. An ideal way to combine your concert visit with monastery history.
