May Festival in a Düren Tradition Stronghold

The Maifest Derichsweiler is one of the most traditional May Festivals in the Düren district. From May 29 to 31, 2026, the Maigesellschaft Derichsweiler will host three days of festivities on the central Martinusplatz in the Derichsweiler district of Düren. It is the culmination of a May tradition that is deeply rooted in the region and begins on the eve of May Day (April 30 / May 1).

Eve of May Day and May Festival — The Two Phases

In the Rhenish tradition, the eve of May Day and the May Festival go hand in hand. Both dates have different characters:

• Eve of May Day April 30 / May 1, 2026 — at the Old Church: Maypole raising, young men of the Maigesellschaft fetch the tree and erect it at night. May Dance with live music, from 8 p.m.
• Maifest May 29–31, 2026 — on Martinusplatz: Three days of festival tent with program, parade, crowning of the May King and Queen, club life, and traditions.

What Defines the Maigesellschaft

The Maigesellschaft Derichsweiler is a traditional community of young men from the district. Their task is to organize the Maypole every year, shape the eve of May Day, and host the Maifest. The Maigesellschaft annually elects a May King and Queen from among its members — the May King and Queen represent the association and carry the tradition throughout the year.

Program Phases of the Maifest

The Maifest follows a three-part structure:

• Friday, May 29, 2026 — Festival Opening: Keg tapping, opening of the festival tent, live band program until late
• Saturday, May 30, 2026 — Parade: Procession of the Maigesellschaft, crowning of the May King and Queen, gala evening
• Sunday, May 31, 2026 — Family Day: Morning pint, children's program, winding down

Derichsweiler within Düren's Urban Fabric

The district of Derichsweiler is located in the western part of Düren, nestled between the agricultural areas of the Rur river valley. Düren, as a major city in the western Rhineland (Düren district), has around 92,000 inhabitants — its districts maintain their own May Festival traditions. Derichsweiler is one of the particularly active districts with a vibrant club life.
