A Saarbrücken Tradition
Bischmisheim is a historic district in the south of Saarbrücken, known primarily for the Schinkelkirche (a Protestant church designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel) and an active club life. The Bischmisheim Volunteer Fire Brigade, fire district 21 of the Saarbrücken fire department, is one of the district's defining communities – and the Maypole setting on April 30th is one of its most important public events.
An Old Tradition, Reinterpreted
The custom of setting up a Maibaum (Maypole) on the eve of May 1st dates back to ancient Germanic and Celtic spring festivals. In the Saarland and its neighboring regions (Palatinate, Lorraine, Luxembourg), it is traditionally strongly anchored. Today, fire brigades often take over the setup – for practical safety reasons, as the straight trunk quickly weighs several hundred kilos and requires professional lifting technology.
Floriansteaks and Good Atmosphere
Around the fire station at Schulstraße 4, the members of the fire district set up their catering infrastructure. At the center:
- Round stand with seating for cozy chats
- Bar with draft beer, Saarland cider (Schoppen), non-alcoholic drinks
- Grill team with the famous Floriansteaks – a trademark of Bischmisheim fire brigade festivals, prepared by the brigade itself (Florian is the traditional patron saint of the fire brigade)
- Live music and party music until late in the evening
District Festival with Club Character
What makes the Bischmisheim May Dance particularly special is its character as a real district festival: neighbors, families, friends meet here – people who know each other from everyday life. The fire brigade is more than an organizer; it is part of the social fabric of the district. The Maypole setting symbolizes this embeddedness.
In the Saarbrücken Club Calendar
In Bischmisheim's district calendar, the Maibaumstellen is one of several regular events supported by the Kulturring Bischmisheim and local clubs – including the “Unpolitical Ash Wednesday”, the Christmas market around the Schinkelkirche, and the Bischmisser Grumbierefeschd (every two years). The Maibaumstellen marks the transition from spring to summer in Bischmisheim's festival tradition.
