About Mahlsdorfer Familienfest

The Mahlsdorfer Familienfest is one of the oldest and largest family festivals in Berlin's Marzahn-Hellersdorf district. Since 1999, politicians Mario Czaja (MdB) and Katharina Günther-Wünsch (CDU) have organized the weekend privately and financed it themselves – with no admission fee and no commercial sponsors. The 26th edition in 2025 (July 19/20) attracted over 6,000 visitors. The 27th edition is announced for 2026 under the motto "After the family festival is before the family festival". Date to be announced in early summer 2026. Stage program Saturday (Schlager party) plus Sunday (Family Day 11 am–5 pm).

Mahlsdorf – The Family Festival Since 1999

Mahlsdorf, in the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district, is one of Berlin's eastern districts – with single-family home structures, a village core, and an active neighborhood scene. Here, since 1999, Berlin CDU politicians Mario Czaja (Member of the Bundestag, former General Secretary) and Katharina Günther-Wünsch (Berlin Senator for Education) have organized the Mahlsdorfer Familienfest annually at Durlacher Platz. The special feature: Both finance the weekend privately – with no admission fee, no commercial sponsors, and no public funding.

27th Edition 2026

The 27th edition is announced for 2026. The exact date will be announced in early summer 2026 – the festival traditionally takes place on a summer weekend (July or early August). The 2025 edition (July 19/20) attracted over 6,000 visitors and is considered one of the most successful in recent years. The motto for 2026 has already been formulated: "After the family festival is before the family festival.".

Program – Schlager Party Saturday, Family Day Sunday

The weekend is clearly divided: Saturday evening features the Schlager party with live acts and DJ sets late into the night – a standalone format with its own audience dynamic. On Sunday, typically from 11 am to 5 pm, the Family Day takes place with a children's program, craft activities, interactive games, amusement rides, a family stage, and lunch catering. Both are free, financed by the private funds of the two organizers and by many volunteers from the Mahlsdorf neighborhood.

Privately Financed – A Model That Has Become Rare

The private financing model is unusual in Berlin: Most comparable events require sponsors, admission fees, or district funding. Czaja and Günther-Wünsch organize the festival from their own budget and emphasize each year the importance of loyal supporters from the neighborhood, without whom the format "would not be possible in this form." Thus, the festival has a clear neighborhood and local political character, without formally being a party event.

Mahlsdorfer Familienfest — edition 2026

The 27th edition of the Mahlsdorfer Familienfest is announced for a summer weekend in 2026 – likely mid/late July as in previous years. Motto: "After the family festival is before the family festival". Schlager party on Saturday evening, Family Day on Sunday (11 am–5 pm). Organizers Mario Czaja MdB and Katharina Günther-Wünsch (privately financed). Free admission. The exact date will be announced in early summer 2026 via Mahlsdorf's community media and mario-czaja.de.

The 27th edition follows the proven format: a two-day family festival at Durlacher Platz in the heart of Mahlsdorf, financed by the private funds of the two Berlin CDU politicians. The 2026 program has not yet been detailed – announcements are typically made a few weeks before the July date. As in previous years, live acts are expected at the Schlager party (Saturday evening), and a children's program and interactive activities are planned for Family Sunday, along with a wide range of food options from Mahlsdorf initiatives, amusement rides, and craft stations.
