16th edition of the three-day family festival at Cecilienplatz in Berlin-Kaulsdorf, Marzahn-Hellersdorf district
Kaulsdorf-Nord is located in Berlin's Marzahn-Hellersdorf district, well east of the city center, between the S-Bahn station Kaulsdorf and the large Hellersdorf housing estate. The neighborhood is characterized by single-family homes, terraced houses, and smaller apartment blocks – family-friendly, quiet, and close to nature. At its heart is Cecilienplatz, with a playground, a small park, and cafes. It is precisely here that the Mittelstandsvereinigung MIT Wuhletal has been organizing the annual family tradition festival since 2010, which has now become one of the most reliable community festivals in eastern Berlin.
The festival lasts for three days and follows a fixed rhythm: Friday is Children's Day with rides, craft activities, a music quiz, and a DJ; Saturday is Community Day with a large stage program, carousels, a food mile, and concluding fireworks; Sunday (Mother's Day) features a neighborhood flea market and a musical brunch. The Mittelstandsvereinigung sees the festival as a platform for local clubs, volunteers, and small businesses from the district – instead of big headliners, there are many small performances and interactive stands.
The patron of the festival is Alexander J. Herrmann, a Berlin delegate (CDU) from the Marzahn-Hellersdorf constituency. The organizer is the CDU's Mittelstandsvereinigung 'MIT Wuhletal' together with local neighborhood associations and the meeting point bürgernAH. Registrations for the Sunday flea market are handled by the Treffpunkt bürgernAH (Tel. 030 564 999 46) – participation is free of charge.
Unlike many commercial city festivals, the family tradition festival is explicitly non-commercial: no admission fee, many stands from local clubs, program design in collaboration with surrounding schools, kindergartens, and sports clubs. This makes it a true neighborhood event – parents, grandparents, and children meet, clubs showcase their work, and local politicians are accessible. The format has been continued largely unchanged since 2010 and has established itself as a fixture.
The 16th edition in 2026 continues the proven three-day format. Friday afternoon kicks off the festival with Children's Day: carousels and rides spin around Cecilienplatz, craft stations invite participation, DJ Henry the Kid and Thomas Krüger's music quiz take over the evening. On Saturday, the festival opens in the morning and runs until 10 PM: the large community program showcases the full spectrum of Kaulsdorf's club life; in the evening, an '80s/90s/2000s DJ combo takes over, followed by the 'Stage Company' with a big hits party. The highlight is the fireworks display around 9:45 PM. Mother's Day Sunday concludes with a neighborhood flea market and a musical brunch.
