Fairytale Christmas Market in the historic old town of Süchteln — first Advent weekend
The Märchen- und Weihnachtsmarkt Süchteln has established itself as one of the most charming Christmas markets on the Lower Rhine. Unlike the large markets in Cologne, Düsseldorf, or Aachen, Süchteln is small, intimate, and atmospherically dense — with handcrafted stalls, fairytale stagings, and a program specifically aimed at families and connoisseurs. In 2026, the market runs on the first Advent weekend: Friday, November 27 to Sunday, November 29.
The venue is the historic old town of Süchteln, a district of Viersen with medieval origins. The market square and Hochstraße are compact, well-lit, and decorated for the Christmas market with fairy lights, fir branches, and fairytale motifs. The historic facades, old stone, a church in the background — the backdrop is part of the charm.
The focus is on the handcrafted world of stalls: artisans, potters, woodcarvers, wool workers, goldsmiths. Alongside them, candle makers, felt artists, glassblowers. Süchteln values quality — mass-produced goods imported from China are less common here than at larger markets. Those looking for a thoughtful Christmas gift often find a better address here.
Classic Lower Rhine Christmas market cuisine: Glühwein (mulled wine, with or without a shot), Punsch (punch), hot chocolate. Accompanied by potato pancakes, bratwurst, cheese and ham platters from regional producers. Stalls selling sweets (nuts, candied almonds, gingerbread, crêpes) complete the offering.
The "fairytale" character is particularly evident in the children's program: small theatre scenes, storytellers, a carousel, Advent crafts, and occasional appearances by fairytale characters in the stall alley. Families with children will find a particularly child-friendly version of the Christmas market here.
A special feature: on Friday and Saturday, the opening hours are extended until midnight. This makes the market attractive for working people and night owls alike — Süchteln is particularly appealing in the evening with its illuminated facades and romantic atmosphere.
Süchteln was an independent town until 1970; since the administrative reform, it has been a district of Viersen in the Viersen district. The old town is well-preserved — old houses, cobblestone alleys, a central church. A visit is worthwhile even outside of the Christmas market season.
The density of Christmas markets is high in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and especially on the Lower Rhine. Süchteln represents the quality-over-quantity option — those who want to avoid large crowds of visitors will find a format here that has preserved its original charm.
The 2026 edition opens, as usual, on the first Advent weekend. The historic old town of Süchteln is transformed into a small fairytale world — with stalls, fairy lights, theatre scenes for children, and Lower Rhine culinary delights.
