A Festival for the Dormagen Music Scene

The MaD Festival – short for Music from Dormagen – is a cultural project by the Dormagen Initiative, explicitly dedicated to promoting, networking, and making the local music scene visible. Instead of a headliner-oriented festival show, the organizers consistently put Dormagen and regionally based bands in the foreground. The result: a two-day festival showcasing the entire stylistic spectrum of the local scene.

Genres: Rock, Hard Rock, Pop, Indie, Singer-Songwriter

Musically, MaD covers the entire spectrum that a local music scene typically has to offer:

  • Rock and Hard Rock – classic guitar bands
  • Pop – Synthpop, Indie-Pop, Power-Pop
  • Indie – Indierock, Singer-Songwriter with band arrangements
  • Singer-Songwriter – acoustic solo acts and duos

This clearly positions the festival as a band festival, not a pop or electronic stage. The 2026 lineup composition will be announced over the summer via the festival website and Facebook.

Black Mill Knights – the club house as a festival location

The venue is Black Mill Knights, Rudolf-Harbig-Weg 1, in Dormagen's Horrem district. The area belongs to the Schwarze Mühle and regularly hosts concerts, club events, and festivals. An indoor stage and an outdoor area allow for flexible programming – important for a September festival in NRW, where the weather can vary greatly.

Festival Atmosphere for Families, Rock Fans, and Crews

MaD explicitly targets families, rock fans, and crews from Dormagen and the surrounding area. The casual, community-oriented atmosphere differs from commercial major festivals: You know half the bands and at least every tenth visitor. Club members help with catering, bands watch each other perform, and a local scene redefines itself.

Dormagen in the Rhein-Kreis Neuss district

Dormagen is a town within the Rhein-Kreis Neuss district with almost 65,000 inhabitants, located on the Rhine between Cologne and Düsseldorf. The city is primarily known for the large Chempark industrial area, where Bayer and Lanxess, among others, produce. Culturally, Dormagen focuses on the Schwarze Mühle, the sports center, and an active club landscape – MaD is one of the most important music events in the club year.

Mad Goes Kölsch and other Initiative Projects

The MaD Festival is part of a larger initiative that organizes music events in Dormagen throughout the year. Sister events are called Mad Goes Kölsch or Mad on Tour. The Dormagen Initiative works with local musicians, the cultural office, and sponsors.

Outlook: Why a Visit is Worthwhile

If you want to look beyond the usual festival routine into the rural Rhineland, MaD is the place for you. You get the real local scene – bands that aren't on the big Spotify charts but write songs you'll be humming later. A 2-day investment in an NRW local culture that is hardly documented – but exists precisely for that reason.
