Ludwig² – The King is Back

"Ludwig²" is one of Bavaria's most successful musicals and is performed at the Festspielhaus Neuschwanstein in Füssen, in the Ostallgäu district of southern Bavaria. The musical tells the life story of the Bavarian King Ludwig II, the "Fairy Tale King," and the conflict between his duties as monarch and his passion for art, music, and beauty.

At the Original Location

The Festspielhaus Neuschwanstein is located on the shores of the Forggensee, directly opposite Neuschwanstein Castle, built by Ludwig II. This means the musical is literally performed at the original location — a connection that hardly any other theater can offer. The story also highlights the King's close relationship with the composer Richard Wagner and his vision for the world-famous castles.

Spectacular Stage Technology

The Festspielhaus features one of Europe's largest revolving stages with an impressive water basin of around 90,000 liters. State-of-the-art stage technology brings romantic dream worlds into the here and now, creating breathtaking visuals. The music is composed by Konstantin Wecker, among others.

History of the Venue

The musical "Ludwig II. – Sehnsucht nach dem Paradies" (Ludwig II. – Longing for Paradise) was first performed at this location in 2000. After financial difficulties, the venue reopened in November 2016 as the Festspielhaus Neuschwanstein; the revised production "Ludwig²" has been running since 2017.

The performance duration is approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, plus a 30-minute intermission. The musical is recommended for ages 8 and up and is suitable for families as well as musical enthusiasts from all over the world.
